Appearance
Eku is a lean, ash-black kenku with charcoal feathers, narrow amber eyes, and several small gaps in his plumage from old street fights. He wears layered gray and rust-colored monk robes beneath a weathered mountain cloak, with cloth wrappings around his hands and feet. A small leather satchel hangs at his side, containing his thieves' tools, a whetstone, and scraps of written phrases he has collected over the years.
Mannerisms
Eku tilts his head sharply when listening, cleans his feathers whenever anxious, and communicates in a careful blend of gestures, written notes, and perfectly copied sounds. He rarely speaks in his own natural voice, preferring voices that convey the emotion he wants others to understand.
Personality
Eku is observant, patient, and quietly compassionate. He notices exits, concealed weapons, and frightened expressions before he notices grand architecture or fine clothing. He prefers helping from the edges of a situation, guiding others toward safety without demanding praise. Beneath his wary exterior is a mischievous survivor who enjoys harmless impersonations, especially copying pompous officials when no one is looking.
Ideals
Mercy. Strength exists to protect the vulnerable, not to dominate them. No one should be condemned merely because they were born in the wrong place.
Bonds
The monks who sheltered Eku are his family. He will risk anything to defend the monastery and the refugees who seek its protection. He also secretly searches for evidence that will clear his name and expose the gang that framed him.
Flaws
Eku expects betrayal and can mistake kindness for manipulation. When frightened, he lies automatically, even when honesty would serve him better. He is also unable to abandon someone being hunted, because he still remembers what it felt like to run alone.
Quirks
Background
Eku hatched beneath the sagging roof of a crowded tenement, though he never knew his parents. The alleys raised him. He learned which market stalls left bruised fruit for scavengers, which watchmen accepted silence instead of questions, and which gang leaders smiled before ordering someone beaten. His gift for imitation made him a useful lookout and messenger. He could reproduce a guard's whistle, a merchant's call, or the voice of a gang courier well enough to open doors and redirect pursuers. For a time, cleverness kept him alive. Then a robbery went wrong, several people died, and both the law and the gang decided Eku was the easiest culprit to blame. He spent months running through cities and villages, sleeping in abandoned sheds and under bridges, until he fled into the mountains during a winter storm. Half-frozen and cornered by wolves, he was found by monks from a remote monastery. They did not demand a confession or ask him to prove his innocence. They gave him food, work, and silence. Under their discipline, Eku learned to turn the instincts of a hunted street child into purposeful movement. He learned to strike without cruelty, to listen before acting, and to let borrowed voices serve truth rather than deception. He still carries the scars of his past, but now he descends from the mountains to protect people who have no one else to protect them.
“His gift for imitation made him a useful lookout and messenger.”
