Appearance
Nalia is a lean half-elf woman of average height, with warm brown skin, close-cropped black curls, and a calm, open face. She dresses in layered undyed linen beneath a charcoal-gray monk's robe, reinforced with soft leather wraps at the forearms and shins. Her hands are unusually distinctive, broad-palmed and heavily callused from decades of striking stone, climbing, gardening, and tending the sick. Within a minute of meeting someone, it becomes clear that Nalia watches the room rather than the speaker. Her gaze measures exits, shadows, breathing patterns, and who has been left unattended. Around her neck hangs a smooth river pebble drilled through the center, worn pale by constant handling.
Mannerisms
Nalia pauses before answering difficult questions and takes one slow breath through her nose. She stands with her feet slightly angled, as though already prepared to move. When listening, she looks at the speaker's hands and shoulders instead of their face. She quietly counts under her breath when tending wounds, and she touches her river stone whenever someone mentions a dead relative.
Personality
Nalia is gentle, patient, and remarkably attentive. She remembers small physical details about people, such as which knee hurts in the cold or which hand they use to hide nervousness. Her kindness is practical rather than sentimental. She will sit through the night, carry the injured, or confront a tyrant without raising her voice. Beneath that calm is an almost frightening persistence. Nalia does not hurry, because she assumes she will eventually have enough time to solve any problem, and this can make her seem eerily confident in situations where everyone else is panicking.
Ideals
Continuance. A life is not measured by how long it lasts, but by how much care it carries forward. If immortality has any moral purpose, it is to remain present when everyone else has been forced to leave.
Bonds
The hospice where Nalia was born still shelters the sick, and she sends nearly every spare coin there. She has sworn to preserve the names and stories of everyone who dies without family, believing remembrance is the first form of resurrection.
Flaws
Nalia treats every preventable death as a personal failure. She can become cold and controlling around healers, soldiers, or leaders who accept casualties too quickly. Her immortality has also made her secretly resentful of ordinary people who can choose a single, complete life, while she is expected to carry everyone else's ending forever.
Quirks
Background
Nalia Kvesa was born in a riverside hospice where her elven mother kept records of fevers and her human father repaired splints, crutches, and prayer wheels. As a child, Nalia learned that people often looked away from the dying, not from cruelty, but from fear. She began sitting beside those who had no visitors, counting their breaths and rubbing warmth back into their hands. When a wandering monk saw her remain awake for three nights beside a stranger, he offered her a place at a monastery built around an ancient spring said to remember every living thing that had ever touched it. Nalia spent twelve years in the monastery, studying the body as a system of balance and the mind as a current that could be trained not to break under suffering. She eventually left after discovering that the monastery's masters had mistaken preservation for wisdom. They sought immortality to escape grief. Nalia seeks it for a different reason. She believes death is natural, but needless loss is not, and that someone must remain alive long enough to carry the names of those who cannot. Her mastery of the Way of the Long Death has made her difficult to kill, but the Epic Boon of Immortality has changed her purpose. She no longer fears that her life will end. She fears becoming so enduring that she forgets why she began.
