Appearance
Kijito is a broad-shouldered male tabaxi with tawny-gold fur marked by dark russet rosettes and a black-tipped tail. His green-gold eyes remain fixed and analytical, rarely blinking when he is studying a mechanism. He moves with deliberate economy, favoring his left side slightly because of the heavy tool harness worn across his right hip. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice the faint scent of cedar oil, hot metal, and crushed mint that clings to his fur and clothing. He wears reinforced scale mail beneath a weathered leather apron, carries a shield etched with geometric brass lines, and keeps a longsword and compact crossbow within easy reach. Small clockwork components, copper wire, and labeled vials hang from nearly every strap.
Mannerisms
Kijito pauses before answering, as though sorting possible replies into labeled drawers. When concentrating, he taps a steady rhythm against his shield with one claw. He addresses Tamu aloud even when the construct is standing silently, and he oils his tools whenever another person is arguing nearby.
Personality
Kijito is patient, observant, and unfailingly practical. He speaks plainly, dislikes waste, and shows affection by repairing objects, organizing supplies, or silently placing a cup of hot tea within reach. His tabaxi curiosity remains strong, but years of solitary study have taught him to restrain the impulse to touch everything immediately. He is most animated when discussing construction, ancient infrastructure, or the behavior of enchanted materials.
Ideals
Order. Every force has a pattern, every pattern has a consequence, and knowledge is valuable only when it is applied with discipline.
Bonds
Tamu, his steel defender, contains the last functional piece of the mysterious alloy from the buried observatory. Kijito will risk almost anything to protect it and uncover the truth about the forgotten city.
Flaws
Kijito cannot leave a mechanism unexplained. He will jeopardize a sensible plan to inspect a strange device, and he tends to treat emotional problems as engineering problems that can be solved with enough diagrams and controlled testing.
Quirks
Background
Kijito grew up among a wandering tabaxi caravan that traded maps, dyes, medicines, and unusual curiosities between distant settlements. His restless curiosity made him a poor merchant but an excellent dismantler. He took apart locks, lanterns, wagons, and eventually a damaged homunculus belonging to a passing artificer. The artificer was less offended by the theft than impressed by the repair, and taught Kijito the foundations of magical engineering before disappearing into a war zone. Kijito kept the lessons, the tools, and an abiding suspicion of anyone who calls a dangerous device foolproof. Years later, Kijito withdrew to a cedar-lined ravine after discovering a buried laboratory beneath an abandoned observatory. There he studied a strange alloy that responded to thought, emotion, and spoken command. His experiments produced a loyal steel defender, a compact hound-shaped construct he calls Tamu. The laboratory also contained records suggesting that the alloy was once used to build guardians for a city erased from every surviving map. Kijito now travels again, not from wanderlust, but because the machines described in those records are beginning to wake, and he intends to understand their purpose before someone else gives them orders.
“His restless curiosity made him a poor merchant but an excellent dismantler.”
