Appearance
A wiry male goblin with rust-red skin, oversized ears, sharp teeth, and bright black eyes that constantly measure the value of everything nearby. His hands are unusually distinctive, with soot-darkened fingertips, thick calluses, tiny brass splinters embedded in the nails, and several knuckles stained permanently blue by alchemical dye. He wears a battered scale coat beneath a tool-laden leather apron, a shield reinforced with clockwork ribs, and a crooked iron crown assembled from stolen cutlery, broken keys, and the jawbone of an old hunting trap. Before he speaks, he takes a slow breath through his nose and clicks his tongue twice, as though testing the sound of a lock.
Mannerisms
He pauses before speaking, inhales sharply through his nose, and clicks his tongue twice. He frequently taps metal objects in descending size order, as though tuning them, and addresses his Steel Defender as if it were a royal adviser. When angry, he lowers his voice instead of raising it.
Personality
I am theatrical, suspicious, and intensely practical. I flatter powerful people only long enough to identify the lever that will control them. I collect useful secrets, regard kindness as a potential investment, and speak to machines more honestly than I speak to living creatures. I enjoy grand declarations, especially when made from atop furniture that was not built to support me.
Ideals
Order through fear. Goblins deserve a ruler clever enough to make the larger folk kneel, and I am the only candidate intelligent enough to wear the crown.
Bonds
My steel defender is the first creation that ever treated my commands as law. I will destroy anyone who dismantles, steals, or attempts to control it.
Flaws
I cannot tolerate being treated as an equal when I believe I should be obeyed. I turn every disagreement into a contest of dominance, even when cooperation would serve me better.
Quirks
Background
The goblin now calling himself King of Goblins was once the smallest hand in a burglary crew that specialized in entering places thought impossible to enter. He was not the strongest climber or the quietest thief, but he understood mechanisms. Locks spoke to him in clicks, traps whispered through their springs, and every vault had a temperament. After stealing a ruined artificer's workshop from a dying noble, he rebuilt its discarded devices into tools for burglary, intimidation, and eventually conquest. His first invention was a brass beetle that could carry a message through sewer pipes. His second was a mechanical hound that tore through the crew's safehouse when they laughed at his claim to royalty. The title began as a joke, then became a threat, and finally became a creed. King of Goblins believes goblins are not naturally weak, only badly organized. He intends to unite them under his crown, whether they consent or not, using clever machines, stolen secrets, and carefully engineered disasters. His criminal contacts provide information, forged papers, and buyers for his inventions. His Battle Smith training gave him something better than hired muscle, a steel defender that obeys without mockery and bites anyone who questions its master's authority.
