Appearance
A compact, weathered lightfoot halfling with sandy-brown hair kept short with a bone comb and a close, uneven beard. He wears carefully patched leather armor beneath a faded green traveling coat that hangs a little too long in the sleeves. His boots are oversized human castoffs, repaired so often that the soles are layered with different colors of leather. The one item he keeps immaculate is a narrow ashwood bow, polished daily and wrapped at the grip with old red thread. His hands are broad and callused from years of climbing, trapping, and hard travel.
Mannerisms
He pauses before entering any room, studying the floor, exits, ceiling, and nearest source of water. When irritated, he measures things with his hand as if comparing them to his own height. He cleans his bowstring before he eats and refuses to sit with his back to an open doorway.
Personality
Quiet, observant, and stubbornly practical. Berrit speaks little around strangers, but he notices every trail, loose stone, and change in the weather. He has a dry sense of humor that appears without warning, usually when someone is taking themselves too seriously. He dislikes being fussed over and becomes more talkative only when discussing tracks, bows, or the shape of a distant ridge.
Ideals
Self-reliance. No person should have to beg for a place in the world. If the road refuses to make room, he will take the long way around.
Bonds
He keeps a red thread tied around his bow for the younger sister who once believed he could do anything. He sends her a small carved token whenever he passes near a settled road, though he has never yet worked up the nerve to return home.
Flaws
He treats ordinary teasing as a challenge and cannot resist proving himself, even when patience would serve him better. Once he decides that someone looks down on him, he rarely revises the judgment. He also mistakes isolation for freedom and would rather sleep in rain than admit he needs help.
Quirks
Background
Berrit Underfoot grew up in a halfling hamlet where every kindness came with a joke about his height and every contest was arranged so that he could be made to lose. He learned early that people looked past him when he stood still, so he began walking farther than anyone else. At first he carried messages between farms, then guided traders through the wooded hills, and eventually stopped returning home for longer than a single night. The wilds did not laugh when he stumbled. They simply demanded that he pay attention. Years alone made him a capable ranger, tracker, and hunter, though not a particularly sociable one. He knows the habits of orcs, goblins, and the other folk who move through the forests, and he has become skilled at surviving in places where larger travelers waste supplies or leave obvious trails. Berrit still bristles when someone calls him small, but his anger has cooled into stubborn purpose. He wants no throne, no praise, and no place in polite society. He wants only to walk where he pleases, keep his own counsel, and prove through quiet competence that a person's reach is not measured from the ground.
