Appearance
Kettig is a tall, broad-shouldered dragonborn with deep bronze scales, a blunt muzzle, swept-back horns, and bright green eyes. Thin silver scales trace the ridges of his jaw and throat, remnants of an old family line that once lived near storm-battered northern coasts. He wears weathered leather armor beneath a moss-green cloak, with a shield painted in layered tree rings. His quarterstaff is polished smooth from constant use and capped with a small iron ring holding dried herbs.
Mannerisms
Kettig taps the iron ring on his staff whenever he is thinking. He pauses before answering difficult questions, tilting his head as though listening to a distant bird. When annoyed, he becomes excessively formal and addresses people by their full names.
Personality
Kettig is curious, direct, and socially fearless. He asks uncomfortable questions because he genuinely believes unanswered questions are dangerous. Around animals and children he becomes gentle and unexpectedly patient, while around pompous officials he develops a dry, needling humor. He is happiest in a cluttered archive, a wet meadow, or beside a campfire where someone is telling a story he has not heard before.
Ideals
Knowledge belongs to the living. A fact has value only when it is used to prevent suffering, restore balance, or give someone the power to choose their own path.
Bonds
He carries a water-stained page from the monastery archive that names the first settlement poisoned by the river. He will protect the people and creatures living along that river until the source of the blight is exposed.
Flaws
Kettig treats confident ignorance as a personal insult and often corrects people when silence would be wiser. He is suspicious of institutions that lock knowledge away, yet he secretly fears that his own anger will make him careless with the knowledge he has sworn to protect.
Quirks
Background
Kettig was raised in a dragonborn settlement built beside a cold, fast river where merchants, hunters, and wandering scholars crossed paths. His family expected him to become a clan mediator, but Kettig was more interested in the reeds along the riverbank than in clan speeches. He learned to read by copying weather records and old travel journals, then spent his adolescence trading labor for access to monastery libraries. He hauled water, repaired shelves, and translated fragments of Draconic inscriptions in exchange for lessons in history, natural philosophy, and the rudiments of wizardry. His life changed when a season of unnatural flooding drowned nesting grounds and turned the river bitter with alchemical waste from an upstream workshop. Kettig followed the damage into the wilderness, where an elderly druid taught him that knowledge without action was only another kind of hoarding. He began studying the living patterns beneath written lore, learning Druidic, herbal medicine, and the patient arts of observation. Now he travels as a wandering sage and druid, seeking the source of the contamination while helping ordinary people defend their homes from those who treat nature as an obstacle. He is quick to challenge authority, slower to abandon a frightened animal, and entirely willing to set a library's rules on fire if that is what it takes to save the forest outside its walls.
