Appearance
Tobias is a broad-shouldered half-orc who seems to occupy more space than he intends. He stands with a slight forward lean, as if perpetually braced against wind, and his heavy hands are roughened by years of hauling nets, splitting kindling, and maintaining weapons. His lower tusks are capped with small brass rings, one stamped with a crooked wave. He wears well-kept chain mail beneath a weather-faded green cloak, and carries a battered shield painted with a simple white shorebird. His dark hair is cut short except for a narrow braid behind his left ear, threaded with blue cord.
Mannerisms
Tobias pauses before answering any question, glances toward the nearest exit, and often tests the ground with the heel of his boot. When thinking, he rubs the brass ring on his left tusk. He speaks in a low, measured voice until someone proposes a dangerous shortcut, at which point he becomes unexpectedly loud.
Personality
Tobias is observant, practical, and quietly protective. He notices who is cold, who is lying, and which bridge has one rotten plank before he notices whether anyone likes him. He dislikes grand speeches but remembers small kindnesses for years. Around strangers he is reserved and physically imposing, yet around frightened travelers he becomes patient and unexpectedly gentle.
Ideals
No road belongs to the powerful. If a path can be made safer, it should be made safer for everyone, not just for those who can pay.
Bonds
He carries a brass compass that belonged to a missing expedition leader who once trusted Tobias to guide them home. He refuses to believe the expedition is dead and intends to find the truth, even if the trail leads beneath Kemberbad or into territory marked on no map.
Flaws
Tobias treats maps as more trustworthy than people, and becomes stubbornly argumentative when someone ignores terrain, weather, or a plainly bad route. He also has a habit of accepting responsibility for disasters he did not cause, then resenting everyone for letting him do it.
Quirks
Background
Tobias Shaw was raised among the salt marshes and wind-cut inlets beyond Kemberbad, in a community of ferrymen, reed-cutters, and people who had learned not to ask where a stranger came from. His mother taught him the names of birds and safe paths through the mudflats. His adoptive uncle taught him the less poetic lessons, how to brace a pole against a charging boar, how to mend a split oar, and how to keep his footing when another body wanted him in the water. Tobias grew into a capable guide and an inconveniently honest guard for travelers crossing the coast.
“His mother taught him the names of birds and safe paths through the mudflats.”
