Appearance
Kivus is a compact, broad-shouldered dwarf with iron-gray hair braided into four precise cords and a neatly trimmed beard bound with copper rings etched in mathematical symbols. His dark brown eyes are sharp and perpetually attentive, magnified slightly by brass-rimmed reading lenses. He wears layered charcoal robes beneath a practical leather shoulder harness, with a spellbook chained to his belt and a polished quarterstaff capped with a crystal prism.
Mannerisms
Kivus pauses before answering difficult questions and silently counts on his fingers while organizing his thoughts. When irritated, he adjusts his spectacles, taps his quarterstaff twice against the floor, and begins speaking with unnerving precision.
Personality
Kivus is methodical, reserved, and intensely curious. He prefers written evidence to personal testimony, but he is quietly protective of people who demonstrate patience and intellectual honesty. Though he often sounds severe, he has a dry sense of humor and genuine admiration for anyone who can teach him something new.
Ideals
Order. Knowledge becomes useful only when it is preserved, classified, and applied responsibly. The world is safer when truth is recorded precisely.
Bonds
The sealed dwarven archive where his studies began must never be looted or forgotten. Kivus carries a copied fragment from its oldest tablet and will risk much to recover the missing pieces.
Flaws
Kivus treats uncertainty as a personal insult and will argue over a technical distinction long after everyone else has accepted the practical answer. He is also dangerously unwilling to destroy a rare book, even when the book is cursed, animated, or actively attempting to kill him.
Quirks
Background
Kivus was born beneath the granite halls of a dwarven hold whose oldest records were kept in a sealed archive. While other young dwarves learned smithing, stonecutting, or warfare, Kivus became fascinated by the careful marks on ancient tablets. He discovered that the archive’s oldest inscriptions were not merely histories, but fragments of a lost magical notation system. His talent for recognizing patterns earned him access to increasingly restricted collections, though his habit of correcting senior scribes made him few friends among the archivists. For decades, Kivus traveled between monasteries, noble libraries, and forgotten observatories, exchanging copying work and historical research for access to rare texts. There he learned the fundamentals of wizardry and began maintaining his own spellbook, organized by date, source reliability, and the likelihood of catastrophic misinterpretation. He now adventures because several references in his research point toward a vanished dwarven conclave that may have discovered how to record a spell permanently in stone. Kivus intends to find that knowledge before careless hands, or worse, destroy it.
