Appearance
Aurelia is a striking leucistic tabaxi with nearly white fur, faint cream shading at the ears and tail, and pale gold eyes. A narrow scar crosses the bridge of her snout, a lasting mark from the ambush that drove her and Magnus from a village years ago. She keeps her fur trimmed close around the sides of her face and dresses in layered, practical travel clothes beneath a weathered leather coat. While working as Gus, she binds her chest, lowers her voice, and wears loose clothing that makes her body difficult to read as male or female. Within a minute of meeting her, most people notice that she rarely stands squarely. She waits with one foot angled toward the nearest exit, tail held perfectly still, and her weight balanced as if she expects the floor to vanish.
Mannerisms
Before speaking, Aurelia pauses for a quiet breath through her nose, as if testing the air for lies. She keeps her tail motionless when concentrating, then lets its tip flick sharply when irritated. When addressed as Gus, she answers immediately. When addressed as Aurelia, she waits just long enough to decide whether the speaker is a threat.
Personality
I am observant, self-reliant, and suspicious of easy affection. I speak plainly when I use Aurelia's voice, but as Gus I cultivate dry humor, blunt confidence, and an almost irritating calm. I notice exits before faces, count supplies without thinking, and become unexpectedly gentle around frightened travelers and children. Beneath the practiced disguise is someone desperate to be known, though I would deny it if asked.
Ideals
Freedom. No person should be owned, confined, or forced into a life chosen by someone else. I will choose my own name, my own shape in the world, and my own road.
Bonds
I will uncover the truth about Magnus and Lantanna, even if the truth destroys the few comforting lies I have left. The mercenary company that gave Gus a place to stand is now my chosen family, and I will not abandon its people to the kind of danger that took Magnus.
Flaws
I assume every kindness hides a bargain, and I would rather destroy a useful relationship than risk being deceived by it. I am quick to anger when someone calls me naive, especially when they are right. I keep secrets instinctively, even from people who have earned the truth.
Quirks
Background
Aurelia was born in the inner court to Lantanna, a courtesan who had been forced into that life and refused to let her strange, pale-coated daughter be claimed by the same world. Lantanna entrusted the child to Magnus, a eunuch who had filled her ears with stories of open roads, mountain passes, foreign cities, and heroes who chose their own names. Magnus fled with Aurelia and became the only parent she knew. He taught her to track water, hide a camp, read a stranger's intentions, and leave before trouble learned her name. He also taught her that her beauty and her femininity were dangers, and that secrets were often the price of survival. For years, he claimed that Lantanna had simply been a vain woman who did not want her daughter. Their wandering life ended in uncertainty rather than safety. In a village neither of them understood, attackers came for them without explanation. Aurelia escaped with a scar on her snout and a new instinct to study every roofline, alley, and unfamiliar hand. Magnus grew older, took increasingly dubious jobs, and left her alone for longer stretches while insisting he had once been a hero or mercenary. Then, at seventeen, Aurelia returned from a village pub to find him gone and two beaten thugs in an alley. They said they had tried to rob a eunuch guarding a courtesan, and that the eunuch had vanished without leaving a trace. Their description was Magnus. Furious at him, Lantanna, and every secret that had shaped her life, Aurelia sold their traveling home, bought supplies, a horse, and a disguise, then began calling herself Gus. She joined a mercenary company to gain access to roads, rumors, criminal contacts, and eventually the power to uncover who her parents were and what truly happened to Magnus.
“Magnus fled with Aurelia and became the only parent she knew.”
