Appearance
Bill is a compact halfling with weathered hands, a square jaw, and a neatly trimmed brown mustache that he keeps waxed with almost ceremonial care. He wears practical chain mail beneath a well-kept soldier's cloak, with a polished shield and a battered longsword that look more lovingly maintained than most nobles' heirlooms. A faint scar cuts through one eyebrow, and his dark eyes have the steady, appraising look of a veteran who has learned to notice exits, cover, and trouble before anyone else does.
Mannerisms
Bill stands with his hands clasped behind his back when listening, like a sergeant at inspection. Before a fight he silently checks the alignment of his shield strap and thumb-runs the edge of his sword guard. He speaks in crisp, economical sentences, then softens them with a dry little smile when he notices someone is nervous.
Personality
Calm, reliable, and quietly brave, Bill treats danger like a practical problem to be solved rather than a reason for panic. He respects competence, keeps promises without being reminded, and has an unexpectedly warm sense of humor that appears only when the situation is worst and everyone else needs it most.
Ideals
Duty. The strong have an obligation to shield the weak, and discipline is the price of living up to that duty.
Bonds
He still carries the dog tags, field token, and unit dice of the squad that saved his life in his first battle, and he will not abandon the memory of those who fell beside him.
Flaws
Bill is slow to trust anyone who talks big and acts small, and he sometimes mistakes caution for wisdom, even when a decisive risk would be the right choice. He has a soldier's habit of taking responsibility for everyone in the room, which can make him stubborn, overprotective, and difficult to dissuade once he believes a course is the honorable one.
Quirks
Background
Bill was born in a river hamlet where the biggest excitement was whether the grain barges would arrive before the rain. Like many halflings, he was expected to become dependable, invisible, and harmless. He tried, at first. Then a border raid burned through the valley, and Bill, not yet half as tall as the youngest guards, picked up a spear and stood in the lane with the village reeve. He learned two things that day, fear can be managed, and courage is often just doing your duty while your knees shake. He enlisted soon after, serving in a line infantry company where his small size made him easy to underestimate and his iron discipline made him hard to kill. Bill rose by proving that the smallest soldier in the shield wall could hold a breach as stubbornly as any giant. He left the army with a reputation for calm under pressure, a mind sharpened by campaigns and training, and a private conviction that power means little unless it protects ordinary people. Now he travels because there is always another road that needs guarding, another village that needs a steady hand, and another bully who has mistaken kindness for weakness.
“Like many halflings, he was expected to become dependable, invisible, and harmless.”
