Appearance
Horatio Oliphant Jones is a neatly dressed lightfoot halfling with chestnut curls, quick brown eyes, and a face that looks permanently one heartbeat away from a grin. He favors a dark green leather coat cut to fit his small frame, soft boots with silent soles, and a half-hidden collection of pockets, straps, and tiny tools. He carries himself with careful confidence, as if every alley and parlor in town might already know him by name.
Mannerisms
He speaks softly but quickly, often punctuating his sentences with a tiny bow or a tap of two fingers against his brim. When thinking, he rolls a coin across each knuckle in turn. He never sits with his back to a door if he can avoid it, and he habitually checks pockets, windows, and exits as if the room were a puzzle only he can see.
Personality
Bright-eyed, nimble-minded, and almost impossibly polite, Horatio treats every interaction like a game of cards where everyone deserves a fair bluff. He is generous in small ways, quick to laugh, and impossible to shame for long. He prefers clever solutions to violent ones, but when pushed he becomes startlingly daring, with a gambler's faith in speed, timing, and a well-placed distraction.
Ideals
Freedom. No lock, law, or noble decree should decide where a person is allowed to go or what they are allowed to keep. Horatio steals for profit, but he values autonomy more than gold.
Bonds
He still sends a share of his earnings to a widowed aunt who thinks he works as a traveling clerk. He keeps one old copper token from the first job he ever pulled, and he will risk a great deal to protect anyone who helped him when he was young and starving.
Flaws
Horatio cannot resist a locked door, a sealed desk, or a challenge that sounds just a little too difficult. He also lies with such cheerful ease that he sometimes keeps lying even when the truth would serve him better. When cornered, he grows defensive and slippery, preferring escape over apology, and he has a bad habit of underestimating how much trouble he can cause when his curiosity gets the better of him.
Quirks
Background
Horatio Oliphant Jones was born to a respectable halfling family that valued ledgers, honest work, and tidy shoes. Horatio valued those things too, at least until he discovered that the city gates, counting houses, and noble townhomes were all much more interesting from the wrong side of a lock. He began as a pickpocket and messenger in the crowded lanes, learning how to vanish into a market throng, how to read a guard’s boredom, and how to smile at a lie before telling one. By the time his family realized he had become an accomplished thief, he was already too quick to catch. He did not turn to crime out of cruelty, but out of appetite, for excitement, for independence, for the thrill of solving a problem that no honest trade would touch. Over time, Horatio learned that a good thief is part performer, part locksmith, part diplomat. He became the sort of rogue who can lift a purse without disturbing a cufflink, then talk his way past the same victim an hour later with an apology and a charming bow. Now he moves through the world with a rogue’s tools at his belt and a thief’s instincts in his bones, doing jobs for people who know better than to ask too many questions.
