Appearance

Avon is a tall, broad-shouldered red dragonborn woman with dark crimson scales, swept-back horns, and pale gold eyes. A jagged scar crosses her left cheek and disappears beneath the rim of her battered steel helmet. She wears practical chain mail beneath a weather-stained crimson cloak, carries a shield marked with a deliberately scratched-out military insignia, and keeps her sword polished despite the rest of her gear being rough and field-worn.

Mannerisms

Avon rolls her shoulders before a fight, taps the rim of her shield when impatient, and addresses animals as if they were junior soldiers. When angry, she becomes unnervingly polite and refers to people by their full names.

Personality

Avon is blunt, restless, and fiercely protective of people who are being ignored or mistreated. She has a soldier's awareness of terrain and danger but little patience for ceremony. She enjoys high-stakes games, bitter coffee, and arguments that reveal what people actually believe. Beneath her defiant independence is a disciplined warrior who still rises before dawn, checks every strap and buckle, and watches exits wherever she goes.

Ideals

Freedom. No banner, commander, law, or god has the right to demand obedience at the cost of innocent lives.

Bonds

She swore to find the surviving children of the village she failed to save and ensure they never become helpless before an army again.

Flaws

Avon treats orders as challenges rather than instructions, especially when she suspects an authority figure is protecting their own reputation. She is quick to provoke bullies, slow to forgive betrayal, and dangerously willing to gamble with her own life when guilt convinces her that survival would be undeserved.

Quirks

Keeps a written list of commanders she no longer trusts.
Names every weapon she carries, but changes the names whenever one breaks.
Collects unusual buttons and clasps from defeated enemies.
Refuses to sit with her back to a door.
Can recognize military marching songs after hearing only a few notes.

Background

Avon was born beneath the banners of a border legion that valued discipline, obedience, and the old stories of draconic honor. Her red dragonborn heritage made her an intimidating presence among the recruits, but it was her endurance and sharp battlefield instincts that earned her a place in the front line. She became known for charging through smoke and confusion with her shield raised, relying on courage, instinct, and a refusal to remain where commanders expected her to stand. Her service ended after a disastrous campaign in which her commanding officer ordered the legion to abandon a village to an approaching raiding force. Avon disobeyed, led a handful of soldiers and civilians to safety, and returned too late to prevent the legion from taking the blame for the defeat. Though some called her a hero, others branded her insubordinate. She left the army with her rank technically intact, her insignia scratched nearly blank, and a growing suspicion that every institution eventually chooses its reputation over its people. Now Avon sells her sword to those who can afford it, protects those who remind her of the abandoned village, and pursues danger mostly because she has never learned what to do with peace.
