Appearance
Hua Mei is a striking fire genasi woman with fair porcelain skin, long black hair, and a severe beauty that turns heads before she opens her mouth. She wears a crimson red and black hanfu accented with small silver butterflies, and an embroidered black eyepatch over her right eye, stitched in crimson thread. She carries herself like a challenge made flesh, with sharp gestures, a hard stare, and the constant impression that she is one insult away from starting a duel. A pocket full of sand always seems to be hidden somewhere in her clothing, as if she were prepared to throw down with the desert itself.
Mannerisms
She punctuates nearly every emotional shift with broad, theatrical hand gestures, as if conducting an invisible orchestra of her own indignation. When annoyed, she tilts her head, narrows her eyes, and speaks with cutting precision. When worried, she becomes intensely overprotective and strangely efficient. She sometimes absently crouches by the roadside to pick flowers, then rises with the expression of someone who absolutely did not just reveal a soft spot.
Personality
Cocky, dryly sarcastic, and just subtly arrogant enough to be exhausting, Hua Mei treats almost every conversation like a contest she has already decided to win. Her remarks can edge into bullying, but beneath the bite is a genuine code that values protection, fairness, and disciplined strength. She has no chill, insists on absurdly hard sparring sessions with her allies, and reacts to injustice with a level of fury that makes her seem bigger than she is. She is rough in public, but privately she has odd, careful gentleness, especially toward flowers, quiet places, and anyone she has decided belongs under her protection.
Ideals
Protection without favoritism. The strong should guard the weak, the innocent should be defended whether they are noble or common, and fairness matters more than comfort. She believes neutrality is not indifference, it is the refusal to let bias distort justice.
Bonds
She carries the memory of the old monk who raised her, and everything she does is either to honor his lessons or to prove she has surpassed them. She also feels an irrational, fierce need to protect the helpless, especially children, outcasts, and anyone being treated as disposable.
Flaws
Her sarcasm can become cruelty before she notices the line she has crossed, and she assumes most people are weaker, slower, or less perceptive than she is until proven otherwise. When she believes something is unjust, she can overreact with ridiculous force and treat measured caution as a personal insult. She also hates appearing vulnerable, so she hides pain, confusion, and affection behind theatrics until someone forces the truth out of her.
Quirks
Background
Hua Mei was born to an orphan's life and raised by bad luck, bruises, and her own sharp tongue. Before she was old enough to understand prayer or mercy, she lost her parents and learned to survive by being faster, meaner, and more suspicious than anyone else on the street. When she was a child, one stumble and a careless hairpin robbed her of her right eye. She wears the embroidered eyepatch now as if it were a badge of office, and she treats every stare she receives like an invitation to be judged and found wanting. Her life changed when an elderly monk took her in as an adolescent. He was not serene, gentle, or remotely the sort of teacher poets write about. He was foul-mouthed, sarcastic, and a trickster with a gift for making discipline feel like a dare. Under him, Hua Mei learned martial forms, meditative focus, and the true use of her elemental fire, but she also learned that devotion could be fierce, irreverent, and still sacred. He taught her to protect the unjustly targeted, to answer cruelty with overwhelming force, and to never trust anyone who claimed to be too holy to be funny. Now she walks the world with the unsettling confidence of someone who thinks most problems are caused by other people being wrong in public. She still speaks in dramatic declarations, flaring her hands and flinging sarcasm like knives, but she is no fool. If she decides something is unjust, she will pursue it with absurd, overcommitted zeal. Beneath the roughness, she has a strange tenderness for flowers, quiet paths, and small acts of decency. She will claim she is only keeping the peace, yet she is the first to leap into danger when someone she has chosen to guard is threatened.
