Appearance
Vincent is a lean human with olive skin, sharp gray-green eyes, and dark brown hair cut short at the sides but left long enough to fall across his forehead. Fine ink stains mark his fingertips, and a thin burn scar circles his left wrist from an early experiment with unstable evocation magic. He dresses in layered scholar's robes beneath a weatherproof traveling coat, carrying a rune-etched spellbook secured by three brass clasps.
Mannerisms
Vincent pauses before answering difficult questions, silently tracing the shape of an invisible rune with one finger. When excited, he speaks faster and begins arranging nearby objects into symmetrical patterns. He habitually checks the clasps of his spellbook whenever he enters an unfamiliar room.
Personality
Vincent is intensely curious, courteous in formal settings, and distractible whenever he encounters an unfamiliar symbol, magical effect, or historical reference. He prefers careful preparation but becomes audacious when confronted with a problem that no one else understands. Despite his academic habits, he has a quiet fondness for practical jokes that use harmless illusions.
Ideals
Knowledge should be preserved and shared. Ignorance is dangerous, but hoarded knowledge is worse, because it leaves everyone else vulnerable to the few who understand the truth.
Bonds
Vincent carries a fragment of a burned celestial manuscript, the only surviving clue to the disappearance of his former mentor. He intends to recover the missing pages and learn whether the mentor vanished by accident, by choice, or because something answered the manuscript's call.
Flaws
Vincent cannot leave a mystery alone, even when common sense demands retreat. He is prone to treating warnings as incomplete data, and he sometimes risks the safety of companions to confirm a theory that could have been tested later.
Quirks
Background
Vincent was raised in a modest human household attached to the archives of a provincial observatory. He learned to read by copying star charts and learned patience by waiting for senior scholars to finish arguing over the meaning of ancient inscriptions. His talent for magic appeared when a misplaced candle flame rose from the page of a forbidden manuscript and hovered above his desk, illuminating a language no living scholar could translate. Rather than dismissing the incident, the observatory's aging wizard took Vincent as an apprentice and taught him that every spell was both a tool and a question addressed to reality.
