Appearance
A broad-shouldered human man with warm olive skin, close-cropped dark brown hair, and a neatly trimmed mustache. His hazel eyes are watchful and slightly hooded, with a pale scar running from his left temple to the edge of his cheek. He wears well-maintained chain mail beneath a dark green surcoat, sturdy leather gloves, and a weathered red scarf tied at the throat. His posture is disciplined, but the lines around his eyes suggest years of fatigue and reluctant compassion.
Mannerisms
Miklos inspects doors, windows, and exits before sitting down. He keeps his hands folded behind his back while listening to arguments, and taps two fingers against his thumb whenever he is silently counting people, supplies, or possible dangers.
Personality
Quiet, observant, and unfailingly prepared, Miklos speaks in an even voice that rarely rises above a conversational murmur. He is courteous to frightened people and exacting with bullies. He prefers useful questions to dramatic speeches, and he shows affection by repairing equipment, sharing food, or quietly taking the most dangerous watch.
Ideals
Order. A fair rule, consistently applied, protects more people than a heroic impulse. If a rule protects cruelty instead, it must be changed through responsibility, not chaos.
Bonds
The surviving families of the river crossing are my responsibility. I will never allow their names to be forgotten, and I will answer any call for help from that community.
Flaws
I obey clear orders too readily when frightened, then become bitter with myself when those orders cause harm. I also have little patience for people who speak beautifully but refuse to make practical sacrifices.
Quirks
Background
Miklos Varescu was born in a river town where the garrison recruited from every neighborhood, and where a human boy could grow up hearing half a dozen accents in the market. His mother kept accounts for a freight company, while his father served as a wagon guard. Miklos inherited his father's patience and his mother's habit of checking every figure twice. He entered the army at seventeen, not from patriotism, but because the army offered food, education, and a clear answer to the question of what a person was supposed to do next. He became a dependable infantryman, then a squad leader, valued for remembering terrain, supply routes, names, and debts. During a border campaign, his commander ordered a retreat that would have abandoned a village full of civilians. Miklos disobeyed, held the crossing with twelve soldiers, and got most of the villagers out. The army officially called the action an unauthorized delay, but the survivors called it a rescue. He was stripped of rank for a season, then quietly restored when the same officers needed someone capable of keeping a company alive. Now he travels as a veteran troubleshooter, seeking work where discipline matters and protecting ordinary people from leaders who treat them as expendable pieces.
