Appearance
A broad-shouldered male rock gnome with slightly oversized ears set high on his head, a broad gnome nose, short salt-and-pepper hair, and heavy welding goggles resting on his forehead. His defining feature is a thick, neatly groomed Lemmy-style mustache and beard. His calm, observant expression carries the quiet relief of a man who has survived long roads and finally found peace. He wears weathered blue and brown traveling clothes beneath a brass-fastened jacket, a fur-trimmed cloak, sturdy gray leather boots, and a satchel filled with excavation tools, maps, and arcane components.
Mannerisms
Tovan pauses before answering difficult questions, then adjusts the bridge of his welding goggles even when they are already secure. He studies doorframes, paving stones, and old scars with the same careful attention. When anxious, he silently counts under his breath in Gnomish.
Personality
Quietly confident and observant, Tovan prefers evidence to speculation and practical kindness to grand speeches. He is patient with frightened people, suspicious of polished experts, and surprisingly funny when discussing dangerous machinery. Years of travel have made him comfortable with solitude, but he is happiest around a small group that respects silence and shares the work.
Ideals
Useful truth. Ancient knowledge belongs in the hands of people who will protect the living, not those who want to own the past.
Bonds
I carry a broken brass seal recovered from the observatory, and I will not rest until I learn which vanished civilization made it and why it answered my blood.
Flaws
I become stubborn and cold when someone treats history as treasure to be bought, and I sometimes risk lives or friendships to preserve an artifact that may not matter to anyone else.
Quirks
Background
Tovan Mesk was raised among the stonecutters, clockmakers, and repairers of a sprawling rock gnome settlement built into the side of an old copper mountain. He was never the quickest with a hammer, but he had an unusual talent for noticing what others missed, a hairline fracture in a shrine, a repeated symbol in a burial chamber, a faint warmth beneath a supposedly dead altar. His welding goggles began as a practical tool for furnace work, then became a familiar part of his appearance after a magical lens he repaired burst into white fire and left him able to see the lingering traces of divine power. His sorcery first manifested during an excavation beneath a collapsed observatory. When the chamber began to fall, Tovan reached for a buried stone marked with a sunburst and released a wave of radiant force that held the ceiling long enough for his companions to escape. Since then, he has wandered from ruin to ruin, studying ancient magic and recording the names of the dead rather than selling discoveries to nobles or collectors. He travels as an archaeologist, tinkerer, and reluctant miracle-worker, seeking the source of the presence that answered him beneath the observatory. He does not believe himself chosen for greatness. He believes he was given one more chance to do useful work, and intends to spend it carefully.
