Appearance
A broad-shouldered human veteran with weathered tan skin, close-cropped dark hair, a scar crossing one eyebrow, and steady gray eyes. He wears practical chain mail polished by habit, a worn shield painted with a faded company sigil, and a fighter's kit kept immaculately in order. His stance is relaxed but alert, like someone who never fully stops measuring exits and distances.
Mannerisms
Speaks in clipped, organized phrases, often counting under his breath when assessing a situation. He unconsciously squares blankets, weapons, and chairs, and when nervous he checks the edge of a blade or the fit of a strap. He rarely sits with his back to a door.
Personality
Calm, dutiful, and quietly protective, Dorian treats every problem like a battlefield that can be read, measured, and mastered. He is not cold, but he is economical with words and values competence over charm. Beneath his disciplined exterior is a surprisingly gentle man who notices the hungry, the frightened, and the overlooked.
Ideals
Duty with conscience. A soldier should be steady in battle, but never become a weapon without a moral compass. Strength exists to shield the weak, not merely to conquer.
Bonds
He keeps the unit token of his fallen squad in a pouch over his heart, and he has sworn to protect any comrades in danger, even if they are former enemies who have earned his respect.
Flaws
Dorian trusts procedure more easily than people, and when plans collapse he can become stubbornly controlling. He carries old command guilt, so he sometimes takes responsibility for problems that were never his to bear. He has little patience for cowards who abandon others, even when fear is understandable.
Quirks
Background
Dorian Vale was born the second son of a miller, but the only future that ever fit him was one with a spear in hand and mud on his boots. He signed on young, not out of glory, but because the marching life had rules that made sense to him. Take your turn. Hold the line. Protect the person beside you. He learned early that courage was not the absence of fear, it was putting fear in its place and stepping forward anyway. His company served along a disputed frontier where bandits, monsters, and rival banners all bled into the same endless skirmish. Dorian survived by being useful in the worst moments, bracing shields, dragging wounded comrades clear, and landing the one decisive blow when the moment finally opened. He left the army after refusing an order that would have left civilians to die for a tactical advantage. Now he travels as a free blade and reluctant hero, trying to prove that discipline and mercy can live in the same heart. He still keeps count of rations, watches doorways without thinking, and salutes old officers before remembering he no longer has to.
