Appearance
Tarric is a broad-shouldered human man with weathered olive skin, close-cropped dark brown hair, and a square, clean-shaven jaw. A pale scar runs from his left temple to the edge of his cheek, and his steady gray eyes rarely reveal surprise. He wears well-maintained chain mail beneath a faded military surcoat, carries a battered longsword at his hip, and keeps his shield marked with the nearly erased insignia of his former unit.
Mannerisms
Tarric checks the straps on his shield whenever he enters an unfamiliar room. He speaks in clipped, practical sentences and addresses people by rank or profession until invited to use their given names.
Personality
Tarric is calm, observant, and dependable. He prefers useful action to grand speeches and naturally positions himself between danger and the least protected person nearby. Though he appears stern, he has a dry sense of humor and an unexpected tenderness toward frightened animals, inexperienced recruits, and anyone trying hard to improve.
Ideals
Duty. A promise is a line drawn in the dirt. Once given, it must be defended, even when doing so is difficult or dangerous.
Bonds
The surviving members of Tarric's former garrison are his chosen family. He will risk almost anything to protect them, and he keeps a list of their names sewn into the lining of his surcoat.
Flaws
Tarric obeys clear orders even when his instincts tell him the order is wrong, unless innocent lives are immediately at stake. He is slow to forgive incompetence, suspicious of ambitious officers, and can mistake emotional vulnerability for weakness.
Quirks
Background
Tarric was born in a border town where every household kept a packed travel bag by the door. His father served as a quartermaster, his mother maintained the town infirmary, and Tarric learned early that survival depended less on heroics than on discipline, preparation, and people doing exactly what they had promised. At seventeen, he enlisted in the provincial army and proved better with a shield and formation drills than with speeches or ceremony. His superiors valued his reliability, especially when frightened recruits needed someone who would hold the line without hesitation. Years later, Tarric's unit was ordered to defend a remote fort that had been abandoned by its commanding officer. The garrison was outnumbered, undersupplied, and left without clear orders, yet Tarric organized the remaining soldiers and civilians into a disciplined retreat. The fort was lost, but most of its people survived. Tarric was praised by some and blamed by others for disobeying the original command to stand and die. He left the army with his honor intact but his faith in distant commanders badly damaged. Now he travels as a sellsword and guard, seeking contracts with clear terms and worthy causes, while quietly searching for the officer whose negligence nearly turned a defensible fort into a graveyard.
