Appearance
Varkor is a broad-shouldered male goliath standing nearly eight feet tall, with slate-gray skin marked by pale geometric birthmarks along his arms and jaw. His black hair is worn in several long braids bound with copper rings, and a trimmed beard frames a blunt, weathered face. One tusk-like canine is slightly chipped from old military service. He wears practical hide and wool beneath a battered soldier's cloak, with a greataxe strapped across his back and a pair of handaxes at his belt.
Mannerisms
Varkor pauses before answering difficult questions, as though listening for an echo in the mountains. He touches the copper regiment insignia whenever he mentions the dead, counts doorways when entering a building, and plants his feet wide apart even when sitting.
Personality
Varkor is deliberate, observant, and protective. He speaks plainly, dislikes wasteful boasting, and treats promises as binding contracts. Around frightened people he becomes unexpectedly gentle, while around bullies he grows cold and intensely focused. He enjoys simple competitions, especially wrestling, axe throwing, and dice games, but pretends not to care when he loses.
Ideals
Protection. Strength has meaning only when it is used to carry someone else through the danger.
Bonds
He carries a copper insignia from his old regiment and refuses to let its fallen soldiers be forgotten. He will risk almost anything to protect civilians caught between powerful forces.
Flaws
Once Varkor chooses a side, he cannot admit that he may be wrong. He is slow to forgive orders that endanger the helpless, and his temper becomes frighteningly direct when someone treats retreat as an excuse to abandon others.
Quirks
Background
Varkor Tzavren was raised among the Stonewake clans, a goliath community that measured adulthood by endurance, service, and the willingness to stand between danger and those who could not withstand it. He was never the swiftest climber or the most eloquent speaker, but he possessed an unusual patience. When younger clan members faltered on the mountain paths, Varkor stayed behind with them, carrying their packs until they reached safe ground. His people called this strength of the quiet kind, a quality he did not understand until much later. He joined a lowland border regiment after a season of famine drove his clan from its high valleys. Varkor served as a shield bearer, caravan guard, and siege laborer, earning the respect of soldiers who initially mistook his silence for stupidity. During a retreat through a burning village, his commander ordered the unit to abandon several trapped civilians. Varkor disobeyed, broke through a collapsing gate, and carried seven people to safety while the army withdrew. He was stripped of his formal rank, but the veterans who served with him still call him sergeant. Now he travels as a sellsword and protector, seeking work that lets him repay the debt he believes he owes to every person left behind by an army.
