Appearance
Harnael Orehand is a broad-shouldered, weathered dwarf with iron-gray hair braided with small silver rings. His beard is carefully divided into three thick plaits, each bearing a tiny bronze icon of a saint, a mountain, and a hammer. His left cheek carries a pale scar from a collapsed mine tunnel. He wears well-maintained scale mail beneath a deep blue clerical mantle, and his shield bears the symbol of a radiant anvil. Though not physically imposing by dwarven standards, he carries himself with the steady authority of a senior priest.
Mannerisms
Harnael taps two fingers against his shield whenever he is considering a difficult decision. He addresses injured strangers as 'cousin' regardless of ancestry, and he ends serious prayers by touching his forehead to the pommel of his mace.
Personality
Harnael is patient, formal, and deeply compassionate beneath a stern exterior. He listens carefully before speaking, remembers the names of people others overlook, and treats healing as both a sacred duty and a practical craft. He has a dry sense of humor that appears most often when circumstances are grim.
Ideals
Duty. A sacred promise is stronger than fear, comfort, or death. The strong must become foundations for those who cannot stand alone.
Bonds
The Stonewake shrine and the miners who died in its collapse are his sacred responsibility. He will risk almost anything to recover its stolen relic, the Ember Anvil, and return it to his people.
Flaws
Harnael is slow to forgive betrayal, especially when it is committed in the name of religion. He can become rigid and judgmental when frightened, and he sometimes treats sincere disagreement as a moral failing. He also believes he must personally carry every burden placed before him, even when accepting help would be wiser.
Quirks
Background
Harnael was born beneath the Stonewake Mountains, in a mining settlement whose oldest shrine was built around a vein of luminous ore. The priests taught that the ore was not valuable because it glittered, but because it reminded the faithful that pressure and darkness could reveal hidden strength. Harnael became an acolyte after surviving a cave-in that killed several members of his clan. He spent years copying liturgies, tending the injured, and learning to hear the subtle complaints of stone before disaster struck. As his devotion matured, Harnael joined a traveling order devoted to protecting miners, refugees, and communities threatened by undead or tyranny. His healing miracles have saved hundreds, but he does not view them as personal accomplishments. To him, divine power is a trust held temporarily for the benefit of others. He now travels with the blessing of his temple, seeking the lost relics of an ancient dwarven saint while opposing those who exploit faith, labor, or the dead. Harnael believes every life is a sacred foundation, and that even the most damaged soul deserves the chance to be rebuilt.
