Appearance
Umbra is a lean, copper-skinned tiefling with swept-back black hair, small swept horns, and a long tail that curls around her ankle when she is thinking. Her eyes are deep amber, and faint ember-colored lines show beneath the skin of her hands when her magic stirs. She dresses in layered travel clothes beneath a weathered scholar's coat, with loose parchment slips tucked into nearly every pocket. Before speaking, she usually pauses for one careful breath and lightly taps two fingers against the nearest written surface.
Mannerisms
She pauses for a measured breath before answering difficult questions, then speaks quickly once she has chosen her words. While listening, she taps two fingers against books, tables, or doorframes as though checking whether the surface is real.
Personality
Umbra is curious, quick-witted, and difficult to pin down. She is generous with information but guarded with trust, preferring to offer three possible explanations rather than admit she has no idea. She loves abandoned places, impossible maps, and people who are willing to change their minds.
Ideals
Freedom. No patron, institution, bloodline, or prophecy gets to decide what she becomes. Knowledge matters most when it gives people more choices.
Bonds
A book of blank pages was left in her possession by the unknown entity behind her pact. She will risk nearly anything to learn what its final page is meant to contain.
Flaws
She treats every warning as an intriguing hypothesis and every boundary as an invitation to investigate. Umbra can also become so absorbed in a mystery that she forgets promises, meals, and the possibility that other people have stopped finding the situation entertaining.
Quirks
Background
Umbra was raised nowhere for long. She remembers rented rooms above bakeries, abandoned watchtowers, river barges, and the names of people who were kind for three weeks before moving on. Her infernal appearance made strangers cautious, but her hunger for books made some of them curious. She learned early that a question could open more doors than a plea, and that a well-copied page could buy a meal when a coin could not. By adulthood, she had become a wandering sage, collecting fragments of forgotten languages, half-proven theories, and rumors about places that did not appear on any map. Her pact began with a dream of a door floating in a starless library. On the other side waited a presence that offered answers in exchange for unfinished questions. Umbra accepted before asking what the presence wanted from her. Since then, strange annotations have appeared in the margins of her notes, sometimes correcting her work and sometimes predicting events that have not happened yet. She travels to chase those predictions, hoping to discover whether her patron is guiding her toward a grand revelation or simply entertaining itself. She has no true home, but every new road feels like a possible beginning.
