Appearance
Ceylan is a lean, sharp-featured tiefling woman with warm brown skin, swept-back black hair, and curved ivory horns wrapped with tiny copper rings. Her amber eyes are bright with restless curiosity, and her long tail is usually busy holding a tool, steadying a bottle, or nudging something out of reach. She smells distinctly of hot metal, citrus oil, and faintly singed herbs, a scent she rarely notices herself. Her traveling coat is patched with colored cloth and fitted with dozens of pockets, while her scale mail is marked with painted geometric patterns inspired by Anatolian tilework.
Mannerisms
Ceylan constantly adjusts straps, checks bottle stoppers, and taps metal surfaces to judge their resonance. When thinking, she rolls a tiny brass gear across her knuckles and mutters fragments of Turkish, Common, and Infernal under her breath.
Personality
Ceylan is energetic, inquisitive, and cheerfully irreverent. She treats every locked door as a mechanical question and every strange magical effect as an opportunity to learn. She is generous with repairs and advice, but she has little patience for people who dismiss practical craftsmanship as lesser than formal scholarship. Her optimism is genuine, though it often arrives wrapped in smoke, spilled reagents, and a rapidly improvised explanation.
Ideals
Knowledge should move freely. A discovery locked away by pride, fear, or privilege is only another kind of broken machine.
Bonds
Her battered notebook contains the unfinished work of the arcanist who first taught her, and she will risk much to recover the pages stolen from his collection. She also sends part of every reward home to keep her family’s repair shop running.
Flaws
She cannot resist testing an unproven device, potion, or magical theory when a safer person would simply walk away. Ceylan also becomes defensive when criticized by scholars who have never repaired anything with their own hands.
Quirks
Background
Ceylan grew up among repair stalls and spice merchants in a crowded city where every broken hinge, cracked kettle, and malfunctioning charm was an invitation to investigate. Her mother taught her practical metalwork, while an elderly arcanist who rented the room above their shop introduced her to the principles of magical energy. Ceylan became fascinated by the places where ordinary mechanics and arcane theory overlapped. She learned to repair clockwork toys, distill pungent reagents, and make small magical devices from scraps that more accomplished scholars would have thrown away. Her tiefling heritage made some people suspicious of her work, especially when a harmless experiment produced purple smoke or a machine began whispering in Infernal. Rather than retreat, Ceylan became determined to prove that knowledge belonged to anyone willing to pursue it. She eventually left home with a battered notebook, a portable tool kit, and a collection of half-tested formulas. Now she wanders from town to town, studying old ruins, trading repairs for meals, and mixing whatever ingredients seem promising. She hopes to discover a lost arcane mechanism rumored to be capable of translating any language, including the forgotten dialects of fiends and ancient civilizations.
