Appearance
Inky Shadow is a lean, long-limbed Tabaxi with charcoal-black fur patterned by subtle blue-gray stripes that become visible in bright light. She keeps her fur meticulously brushed, especially the ruff around her neck, and wears a collection of small brass rings on one ear and several braided cords around her wrists, each marking a voyage, a debt, or a narrow escape. Within a minute of meeting her, most people notice that her eyes rarely settle on faces. They track exits, hands, pockets, ceiling beams, and the nearest unsecured window. Her sailor's coat has been tailored into a practical rogue's jacket, with hidden inner pockets and reinforced seams.
Mannerisms
She angles her body toward the nearest exit even during friendly conversations, taps twice on wooden surfaces before opening doors, and refers to rooms as cabins, corridors as passageways, and enemies as hostile crew. When thinking, she silently counts ceiling beams or hanging fixtures.
Personality
Inky is quick-witted, observant, and cheerfully irreverent in the face of danger. She speaks to strangers as if they are fellow crew until they prove otherwise, then becomes effortlessly polite in the way of someone measuring how difficult they would be to rob. She has a practical kindness for the desperate, a deep dislike of bullies, and an instinctive need to know where every object in a room could be used.
Ideals
Freedom. No captain, king, guildmaster, or god has the right to decide who is cargo and who is crew. People deserve the chance to choose their own course.
Bonds
She will one day reclaim the Gloaming Current's surviving crew and give them a ship worthy of their better selves. She also keeps a brass compass taken from the captain who chose profit over human lives.
Flaws
She assumes every offer of help conceals a hidden price, and when frightened or uncertain, she becomes more likely to steal something than to ask a direct question. She also has a dangerous habit of treating authority as an obstacle to be outmaneuvered rather than a fact to be considered.
Quirks
Background
Inky Shadow of the Shaded River was born in a riverside port where Tabaxi merchants, ferrymen, and smugglers traded stories as freely as cargo. She learned early that every harbor had two maps, the one posted on the wall and the one held in the memories of sailors. Her talent for moving quietly through rigging and cargo holds brought her aboard the pirate vessel Gloaming Current, first as a runner and later as a trusted infiltrator. She became known for entering guarded storehouses without disturbing a single coil of rope, then leaving behind a neatly folded scrap of sailcloth as her calling card. The Gloaming Current eventually crossed a line Inky could not ignore. Her captain began raiding refugee boats and selling passengers to a river fortress. Inky sabotaged the ship's rudder, freed the prisoners, and helped them reach shore, but the vessel was lost and the surviving crew scattered. Branded a traitor by pirates and inconveniently famous among authorities, she now makes her living delving into ruins and dungeons. To Inky, a dungeon is simply another ship, its corridors are decks, its traps are rigging, and its guardians are a crew that has forgotten how to watch the corners. She hopes to earn enough coin to buy or build a new vessel, one that carries people toward freedom instead of away from it.
