Appearance

Naphtali is a slender Eladrin with warm copper-brown skin, pointed ears, and thick dark hair cut just below the jaw. Fine strands of her hair turn leaf-gold and russet when her emotions rise, a subtle expression of her autumnal fey nature. She dresses like a practical circus illusionist, wearing a plum-colored waistcoat, fitted charcoal trousers, soft leather boots, and a long coat lined with mirrored scraps of glass. Her spellbook is bound in faded red leather and secured with three different locks. Within a minute of meeting her, people notice that she never stands evenly. She rests her weight on the balls of her feet, as if expecting the floor to tilt or someone to call her name from behind. Her voice is normally low and dry, but when frightened her breath catches between words and her sentences become unnaturally precise.

Mannerisms

When waiting, Naphtali rocks subtly from heel to toe and counts nearby exits under her breath. She tests unfamiliar cups, door handles, and spell components with a fingertip before using them. When rattled, she stops blinking and speaks in clipped, perfectly grammatical sentences. During casual conversation she often finishes a thought by drawing a tiny symbol in the air with one finger.

Personality

Naphtali is observant, guarded, and quietly theatrical. She rarely lies when a carefully selected truth will do more damage. Around children and frightened animals she becomes unexpectedly gentle, while around established authorities she grows insolent and inquisitive. She enjoys applause but distrusts admiration, believing that anyone who watches closely enough will eventually find the hidden string.

Ideals

Freedom. No creature, mortal or fey, should own another person's future. Magic should open doors, not turn them into cages.

Bonds

My sister's life was saved by my bargain, and I will never allow Alcyndar to claim the price without a fight. The circus gave me refuge when I had nowhere else to go, so I will protect its people as fiercely as I protect my own freedom.

Flaws

I cannot resist testing a magical loophole, even when caution would serve me better. Alcyndar taught me to see every relationship as a contract, and some part of me still expects kindness to become a debt.

Quirks

She names every disguise after a different kind of pastry.
She keeps one page of her spellbook upside down because Alcyndar once insisted it was the correct orientation.
She applauds softly for her own successful illusions, even when nobody else notices them.
She refuses to sign contracts with blue ink.
She collects scraps of broken mirrors from every town where the circus performs.

Background

Naphtali was born into an Eladrin family marked by an old hag's spite. Generations ago, an angry hag cursed her bloodline so that one child in every generation would die before reaching adulthood. In Naphtali's generation, the curse chose her younger sister. Rather than accept the bargain of fate, Naphtali traveled to the lonely estate of Alcyndar, a powerful sorceress whose reputation was built on miracles that always came with hidden prices. Naphtali pledged her soul and entered Alcyndar's service as an apprentice. The curse vanished from her sister, but the bond was real, and Alcyndar kept its terms hidden behind layers of legalistic magic. Under Alcyndar's tutelage, Naphtali learned more than charms and incantations. She studied the structure of enchantments, the loopholes in magical contracts, and the delicate geometry of illusion. Her talent became particularly formidable, allowing her to make false things feel emotionally true and real things appear subtly impossible. Eventually, Alcyndar's greed became unbearable. Naphtali fled with only her spellbook, a handful of stolen notes, and the knowledge that her soul was still collateral. She joined a traveling circus led by Zephyrai, first as a stage illusionist and later as its discreet magical troubleshooter. The circus gives her cover, income, and access to strangers from every corner of the world. Every performance is also research. Somewhere among those audiences, merchants, priests, thieves, and occultists is the person who knows how to sever a soul bond without transferring its cost to someone else.
