Appearance
A broad-shelled tortle with deep ochre skin, moss-green markings around the eyes, and a weathered shell etched with faded geometric symbols. His spectacles are fitted into a leather brow strap, and his shell bears a small brass plate engraved with arcane formulae. He dresses in layered scholar's robes adapted for a tortle's shell, with scroll tubes secured along his sides and a polished yew wand tucked behind one shoulder.
Mannerisms
He taps the edge of his shell whenever calculating, pauses for an unnervingly long time before answering simple questions, and tilts his head until one eye peers over his spectacles. When excited, he speaks faster and begins drawing diagrams in the air with one claw.
Personality
Patient, observant, and unfailingly curious. Odufemi listens as though every conversation contains a hidden footnote. He is gentle with frightened people and animals, but becomes animated and unexpectedly sharp when discussing historical mysteries or flawed magical theory.
Ideals
Knowledge should be carried to those who need it. Secrets have value, but hoarded knowledge becomes another form of cruelty.
Bonds
He is determined to find the missing diviner whose unfinished research may explain the vision of the burning library. He also carries a water-damaged page from his first mentor's journal and refuses to let it be destroyed.
Flaws
He can become so absorbed in solving an intellectual problem that he ignores immediate danger, social obligations, and occasionally hunger. He is also quietly condescending toward people who destroy books, maps, or records through carelessness.
Quirks
Background
Odufemi Niskanen was hatched beneath the limestone shelves of a coastal cavern where generations of tortles kept tide charts, shell carvings, and oral histories. His mother taught him to read the patterns of currents, while an aging human archivist taught him that written knowledge could preserve what memory sometimes lost. Odufemi became fascinated by the strange symbols in the archivist's private notes, especially a recurring diagram of an eye surrounded by seven stars. He eventually learned that the diagram was a diviner's sigil, and that the archivist had spent decades trying to predict a catastrophe that never came. As a young adult, Odufemi left the coast to study at a distant college, where his patient manner and exceptional memory earned him a place among the sages. He specialized in divination and historical investigation, using visions to locate lost texts and uncovering contradictions that embarrassed powerful scholars. His most unsettling vision showed a library burning while a single empty chair remained untouched by the flames. He now travels to discover whose seat it is, believing the answer may reveal how to prevent the disaster. His shell is both a portable archive and a reminder that knowledge must be carried into the world, not merely locked away in quiet rooms.
