Appearance
Gorlock is a lean human man with a narrow face, watchful gray eyes, and hands that never seem to stay still for long. He wears well-kept dark leather over plain travel clothes, with a polished arcane focus hanging at his belt beside a crowbar and a set of thieves’ tools. His hair is cropped short for convenience, and he favors a hood even when no rain threatens, as if he expects every alley to have an audience.
Mannerisms
He speaks softly and deliberately, like a man testing each word for hidden wires. When thinking, he taps one finger against his thumb in a slow counting rhythm, and he habitually checks doors, windows, and exits before he sits down.
Personality
Disciplined, observant, and unnervingly patient, Gorlock treats every room like a negotiation and every conversation like a contract. He is not cruel, but he is exacting, and he respects people who keep their word more than those who make grand speeches.
Ideals
Order. Crime is only chaos without a ledger. If rules exist, they should be exact, enforceable, and, when necessary, cleverly redirected toward the greater good.
Bonds
He still keeps one brass token from his old crew, and he will risk his life before letting it be taken from him. He also owes a quiet debt to the one companion who once hid him from the city watch, and he intends to repay that kindness even if it costs him his patron’s favor.
Flaws
He trusts procedure more than people, and if a plan is written down neatly enough he may follow it even when his instincts say to run. He also has a dangerous habit of treating moral compromises as accounting problems, as if every sin can be balanced by the correct payment.
Quirks
Background
Gorlock learned the law from the wrong side of it. He was born in a crowded city district where every lock had a price and every promise had an expiration date. As a clever human with a talent for reading people, he began as a runner for a burglary crew, carrying messages, counting coin, and learning which doors opened easily and which ones opened only after a whispered threat. His criminal background taught him stealth, etiquette, and the cold arithmetic of survival, while his human resourcefulness kept him alive when plans fell apart. His pact came later, after a failed job left him cornered in a magistrate’s archive with guards on every stair and no exit in sight. In desperation, he spoke a name he did not understand, a name that answered from the dark between candle flames. The bargain was simple, power for obedience, and Gorlock accepted because the law had already made a criminal of him. Now he works in a strange balance, breaking rules with precision, paying every debt on time, and serving an unseen patron with the same discipline he once gave to his crew. He tells himself he is not a thief anymore, only a man who knows exactly how much order the world can bear before it fractures.
