Appearance
A lean tiefling man with deep red skin, swept-back black horns, and a faint gold sheen in his eyes. He dresses like a well-prepared thief who fell in with darker company, dark leathers, a hidden dagger at each hip, and a blackened rod of polished bone. Fine ash-colored tattoos spiral from his wrists to his forearms, glowing dimly when he lies or invokes his patron. His smile is quick, charming, and slightly dangerous.
Mannerisms
He speaks softly when angry and smiles when making a threat. He flicks a coin across his knuckles whenever he is thinking, and he never enters a room without first finding the nearest shadow.
Personality
Wry, observant, and impossible to fully read, Varek treats danger like an old drinking companion. He is courteous when it serves him, sarcastic when it does not, and surprisingly protective of people who have been pushed too far by the world.
Ideals
Freedom. No fiend, magistrate, or crime lord gets to own a soul. Power is only worth having if it can be used to break chains, especially the ones people do not realize they wear.
Bonds
He still carries a signet ring stolen from the first target he ever truly feared, and he will not part with it until he knows why the coffer chose him.
Flaws
He cannot resist a challenge, a locked door, or a deal that seems too clever to be real. When cornered, he lies first and trusts second, even when honesty would serve him better.
Quirks
Background
Varek was born under a storm cloud and a bad reputation, which in his city meant the same thing. His tiefling features made every honest door feel half-closed, so he learned early that it was easier to slip through a cracked window than to wait for mercy. By sixteen he was picking pockets for a dockside crew, by twenty he was running messages between smugglers, thieves, and the sort of gentlemen who wore silk over knives. He was good at it, too good, until he stole from a sealed black iron coffer that had no right to be warm. Inside was not gold, but a voice, patient and amused, promising power in exchange for future favors. Varek expected a trick and accepted it anyway. The pact gave him a silver tongue, a handful of hellfire, and the unnerving sense that the shadows now recognized his name. He has kept working the streets as a criminal because old habits are useful, but now every heist has a second purpose, gathering secrets, names, and leverage for a patron whose plans remain deliciously obscure. He tells himself he is using the fiend, not serving it, though the distinction grows thinner each time he calls on that power.
