Appearance
Vox Lexington is a broad, dark-green tortle with amber eyes, a high-domed shell patterned in bands of copper and moss, and a narrow leather harness crowded with brass tools, glass vials, wire spools, and folded diagrams. He wears a soot-stained artificer's coat tailored around his shell, soft gloves with the fingertips cut away, and a tool belt that jingles whenever he walks. He takes up more room than he realizes, often blocking doorways or looming over a workbench while insisting that he is being unobtrusive. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice that he repeatedly checks a small brass gear at his collar, turning it exactly three times whenever he is thinking.
Mannerisms
Vox leans over people when speaking, forgets how large his shell is, and unconsciously turns the brass gear at his collar three times whenever he is solving a problem. He narrates complicated repairs under his breath as though coaching an invisible apprentice.
Personality
Vox is enthusiastic, inventive, and relentlessly helpful. He treats every locked door as a conversation starter and every broken object as a personal challenge. He is generous with repairs, suspicious of authority, and far more comfortable explaining the inner workings of a machine than discussing his own feelings.
Ideals
Ingenuity should serve the powerless. A clever invention is only as good as the people it protects.
Bonds
He keeps the brass gear taken from the gang's master lock and intends to dismantle the organization that still uses his inventions to prey on the helpless.
Flaws
Vox cannot resist improving a device that is already functioning, even when doing so is dangerous, illegal, or deeply unwanted. He also lies too quickly when questioned about his criminal past, then overexplains the lie until everyone knows something is wrong.
Quirks
Background
Vox Lexington was raised among river-port tortles who valued patience, self-sufficiency, and the long memory of stone. He possessed patience in abundance, but his curiosity was faster than his judgment. As a youth, he dismantled fishing winches, lockboxes, signal lamps, and eventually a magistrate's clockwork evidence seal, not to steal anything, but to learn how it worked. The magistrate called it burglary. The local thieves called it talent. Vox began repairing contraband devices for smugglers, forging keys for desperate families, and building tiny mechanisms that could open doors without breaking them. His criminal career ended when a gang boss demanded that he sabotage a relief engine supplying clean water to a flood-struck district. Vox accepted the job, then secretly rebuilt the engine to work twice as efficiently and arranged for the stolen payment to be distributed among the families who needed it. The gang discovered the deception, and Vox fled with little more than his tools, a damaged prototype cannon, and the brass gear from the gang's master lock. Now he travels as an adventurer, using the same skills that once made him useful to criminals to expose crooked officials, protect ordinary people, and prove that clever hands are not bound to wicked purposes.
