Appearance
Tavi Brisk is a three-foot-tall halfling with russet curls, warm brown skin, and a compact, sturdy build. He wears a weathered green cloak over a chain shirt, with small bone toggles carved like leaves. He walks with a slight forward lean and an unusually deliberate, heel-first tread, as though every patch of ground deserves examination. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice the old brass compass hanging from his belt. Its casing is polished smooth only along the edge where his thumb has worried it for years. He carries a shortbow sized for his frame and keeps a strip of dried mint tucked behind one ear.
Mannerisms
Tavi pauses before answering, glances at the nearest exit, and tests unfamiliar ground with the toe of his boot. When thinking, he rubs the worn rim of his compass with his thumb. He speaks in short practical sentences and describes people by the tracks they leave behind.
Personality
Quietly observant and stubbornly dependable, Tavi notices small practical details before grand gestures. He dislikes boasting, crowded rooms, and maps drawn by people who have never walked the land. He is more comfortable sharing silence beside a cookfire than making conversation in a tavern, but his dry humor appears when others least expect it.
Ideals
No one should be helpless simply because they were born far from a road. The wild belongs to those who respect it, and safety should be shared with those who need it.
Bonds
The brass compass at my belt belonged to my missing sister, Suri. I will follow its last known trail wherever it leads, and I will not abandon people who are lost or hunted.
Flaws
I assume that anyone who gets lost has ignored good advice, and I become stubborn when someone challenges my reading of the land. I also keep searching for signs of Suri long after reason says the trail is cold.
Quirks
Background
Tavi Brisk was raised among a wandering halfling caravan that moved between high meadows, pine valleys, and the rough edges of settled country. His family traded smoked mushrooms, medicinal roots, and hand-mended gear, but Tavi preferred the quiet work beyond the campfire. He learned to read weather by the taste of the wind, to follow a fox without disturbing the grass, and to judge a safe crossing by the sound beneath the stones. The brass compass at his belt belonged to his older sister, Suri, who vanished while guiding a group of refugees through a mountain pass. Tavi has never accepted that she simply died. He became a ranger because the wilderness was the only place where Suri's trail still felt alive. At first he hunted for signs of raiders and monsters, but his purpose widened. He now protects travelers who cannot read the land, especially small communities ignored by lords and merchants. Tavi's blunt manner hides a patient kindness. He will grumble while repairing a stranger's pack, then quietly leave his last strip of dried meat beside their bedroll. Every journey is, to him, both a duty and a search for the next faint indication that Suri might have passed that way.
