Appearance
Petros Vaskren is a broad-shouldered, weathered human man with a flattened nose, thick gray eyebrows, and a magnificent white mustache stained faintly by woodsmoke and cooking grease. His body still carries the dense, powerful build of a former pit fighter, although age has bent his posture and left his hands knotted with old injuries. He wears patched travel clothes beneath a faded monk's sash, soft leather shoes, and a cook's apron covered in scorch marks. His frying pan hangs from his belt like a treasured weapon.
Mannerisms
Petros stirs empty pots while thinking, taps rhythms on tabletops with his fingertips, and addresses nearly everyone as if they were a former opponent. Before a fight, he asks whether anyone has eaten. After a fight, he offers the winner a bowl of stew, regardless of who won.
Personality
Petros is warm, generous, and cheerfully argumentative. He treats camp cooking as a sacred art and combat as an unfortunate interruption to dinner. His thoughts sometimes drift into old memories, causing him to confuse companions with long-dead friends or refer to current events as if they were bouts from his youth. Beneath the senility is a keen instinct for danger, a fighter's eye for balance, and an unshakable kindness toward the overlooked.
Ideals
No one should go hungry while I have food to share. Strength is measured by who you protect, not by how many people you can defeat.
Bonds
He carries the battered iron pan that belonged to the monastery cook who first fed him after his injury. Petros swore to protect travelers, drifters, and hungry children wherever he finds them, especially from the sort of cruel men who once ran the fighting pits. He also hopes to find the scattered members of his old troupe and cook them one final meal.
Flaws
Petros is dangerously certain that his memories are accurate, even when they are not. He may confidently describe a recent event that happened forty years ago, mistake an enemy for an old sparring partner, or wander into danger because he has forgotten why he entered a room. He also refuses to admit that he cannot hear someone, responding to whispered instructions with loud and unrelated advice.
Quirks
Background
Petros Vaskren was once a celebrated pit fighter, famous in crowded arenas and back-alley rings for his crushing strength, stubborn endurance, and strange habit of thanking opponents before knocking them unconscious. In his youth, he traveled from town to town with a small fighting troupe, sleeping beneath wagons, learning the roads, and surviving on whatever work he could find. A wandering monastery took him in after a bout left him badly injured, and there he learned that discipline could make his strength more useful than rage ever had. He never became a serene master. He became a very strong, very loud student who occasionally fell asleep during meditation and snored through entire lessons.
