Appearance
Kartig is a lean, soot-red dragonborn with dark iron scales along his shoulders and jaw, fading to brick-red across his chest. One horn is chipped near the tip, and a thin scar cuts from his left brow to the corner of his muzzle. He wears a patched leather coat over practical travel clothes, with a red scarf wrapped around his throat and a battered belt carrying several carefully maintained tools. His amber eyes are watchful, and his claws are stained with oil, charcoal, and old lock grease.
Mannerisms
He taps the flat of a blade against his thumb while thinking, pauses before entering any room to inspect the hinges, and pronounces names carefully as if testing whether they might be false.
Personality
Kartig is quiet, practical, and intensely observant. He notices who sits closest to the exit, which guard favors one knee, and whether a supposedly clean room has dust disturbed near the walls. He is dryly funny when relaxed, fiercely protective once trust is earned, and more comfortable showing affection by repairing someone's gear than by offering reassurance.
Ideals
No lock should decide who gets to live safely. Power protects itself, so someone has to learn how to open the doors it hides behind.
Bonds
He carries a scorched brass token belonging to his missing cousin and will risk almost anything to uncover the truth of the magistrate's disappearance.
Flaws
Kartig assumes every offer has a hidden cost, and he often ruins honest arrangements by searching for the betrayal that is not there.
Quirks
Background
Kartig was raised among the ember-scaled clans beneath the eastern escarpments, where dragonborn families guarded old roads and repaired the ironwork of caravans. His clan expected him to become a smith, but Kartig had little strength for the forge and even less patience for inherited duties. He discovered instead that locks, hinges, hidden catches, and guarded doors made a kind of music. By sixteen, he could open a merchant's strongbox without disturbing the dust on its lid. His criminal career began with smuggling medicine through a military checkpoint, then grew into burglary, document theft, and the occasional extraction of someone who had become inconvenient to a powerful employer. Kartig was never the planner's favorite, but he was the one sent through the narrow window or across the creaking roof. A job against a magistrate's vault went wrong when Kartig found evidence that the magistrate had arranged the disappearance of his younger cousin. He stole the records instead of the contracted jewels, burned his old contacts, and fled with only his tools and a stolen sword. Now he works as a fighter for hire, trying to turn the instincts that once made him a criminal toward protecting people who cannot afford locked doors, armed guards, or second chances.
