9 featuresAction
- Divine SenseLevel 1
As an action, Maximus can open his awareness to detect strong evil or good until the end of his next turn. He knows the location of any celestial, fiend, or undead within 60 feet that is not behind total cover, and he knows the type of any being whose presence he senses. He can use this feature a number of times equal to 1 plus his Charisma modifier, minimum once, and regains all uses after a long rest.
- Lay on HandsLevel 1
Maximus has a pool of healing power that restores 4 hit points. As an action, he can touch a creature and draw power from the pool to restore hit points, up to the amount remaining. Alternatively, he can expend 5 hit points from the pool to cure one disease or neutralize one poison affecting the target. This feature cannot restore hit points to undead or constructs, and the pool replenishes after a long rest.

Appearance
Maximus is a young human man in his late twenties with short black hair, a neatly kept slight beard, and a broad, square jaw that tightens whenever he is weighing a difficult decision. His old city watch coat hangs slightly loose over dark blue and white armor, its cuffs carefully restitched and its brass buttons polished far more often than the rest of his gear. A blue cloak edged in white rests over his shoulders. He carries a greatsword and a shield bearing the holy symbol of justice, though he must choose which to wield in battle. His brown horse is usually nearby, and his expression is guarded but earnest, as if he is always deciding whether a stranger deserves his trust.
Mannerisms
He checks the fastening of his old coat whenever he is nervous, rests two fingers briefly against the holy symbol on his shield before making a serious decision, and addresses officials by rank even when he deeply distrusts them. When eating, he takes small deliberate bites and keeps his jaw clenched until he has decided whether he trusts the people at the table.
Personality
Maximus is restrained, observant, and intensely dependable. He speaks plainly, dislikes unnecessary displays of emotion, and instinctively places himself between danger and anyone who cannot defend themselves. Though wary of institutions, he still believes discipline and law can be forces for good when guided by conscience. Around children, animals, and exhausted travelers, his guarded manner softens noticeably.
Ideals
Justice must protect the powerless, not merely punish the convenient. Laws are worthy of respect only when those who enforce them are willing to obey their spirit as well as their letter.
Bonds
The people of the poorest district he once patrolled still deserve protection, and Maximus will return to defend them when the time comes. He is also fiercely devoted to Bracken, the brown horse who stayed with him after the watch abandoned him.
Flaws
Maximus is so afraid of becoming corrupt that he can be rigid, suspicious, and slow to forgive even minor abuses of authority. He sometimes mistakes harsh judgment for moral strength, and he would rather face danger alone than admit that he is lost.

Background
Maximus Havorsen entered the city watch at fifteen, young enough to believe that a uniform could make a person honest. He learned patrol routes, crowd control, stable work, and the quiet habits of people who thought no one was watching. For seven years he served faithfully, becoming known as a dependable guard who would stand in the rain for a poor district just as readily as he would protect a merchant's countinghouse. His brown horse, Bracken, was assigned to him during a mounted patrol and became his closest companion. By the time Maximus was twenty-two, he had seen too many officers accept bribes, overlook violence, and twist the law against those who could not afford to resist. He left rather than become part of the rot, but leaving did not bring freedom. It left him with an old coat, a tarnished reputation, and nowhere certain to go. One evening, tired and ashamed of how directionless he had become, he wandered into a church devoted to justice with Bracken waiting outside. The priest did not ask him what rank he had held. Instead, the priest asked what he intended to protect now. Maximus has not yet found a perfect answer, but he has taken up the shield, sworn himself to lawful mercy, and begun the long path toward becoming the kind of guardian he once believed the city watch could be.
