Appearance
A broad-shouldered goliath woman standing just over seven feet tall, with slate-gray skin marked by pale natural mottling across her shoulders and forearms. Her dark hair is kept in a long, practical braid threaded with small brass rings from her guild. She has a square, steady face, a heavy brow, and clear gray eyes that rarely hurry toward judgment. Her hands are especially memorable, large and heavily callused from years at the forge, with flattened nails, heat-darkened fingertips, and faint metallic stains that never quite wash away. Before speaking, she usually takes a slow breath through her nose and clears her throat as if preparing to address a mountain.
Mannerisms
She pauses for one measured breath before answering difficult questions, then speaks in a low, gravelly voice. When considering a problem, she rubs her thumb across the flattened tips of her fingers as though testing the edge of an invisible tool. She stands very still when angry, which is more alarming than shouting.
Personality
Auloma is deliberate, observant, and quietly protective. She listens longer than most people expect, remembers who did the work nobody praised, and has a dry sense of humor that appears in the middle of otherwise serious conversations. She dislikes waste, boastfulness, and people who mistake gentleness for helplessness. Around a forge or campfire, she becomes unexpectedly conversational, especially if someone asks about tools, metal, or the proper way to repair something.
Ideals
Good work should protect people. A blade, bridge, bargain, or promise is worthless if it fails the person who trusted it.
Bonds
She carries the apprentice's unfinished hammer, and she will cross almost any distance to protect a craftsperson, traveler, or laborer abandoned by those with more power. Her smiths' guild gave her a place after she left the mountains, and she refuses to let its name be cheapened by corrupt masters or exploitative employers.
Flaws
She treats admitting weakness as if it were a betrayal of everyone who depends on her. When angry, she becomes blunt, physically imposing, and far too willing to solve a social problem by breaking the thing at its center.
Quirks
Background
Auloma Targan was born among a highland goliath clan that measured worth through useful work, endurance, and the willingness to carry what others could not. She learned to shape iron beside her aunt, first making cooking hooks and pitons, then horseshoes, axe heads, and finely balanced tools. The forge taught her patience, but the mountain taught her anger. When a winter avalanche trapped a trading party beneath the snow, Auloma spent two days breaking through ice and stone to reach the survivors. She saved three lives, but one of them was a young guild apprentice who never stopped insisting that her strength belonged in the wider world, not only in the clan's valley.
