Appearance
Grog is a broad-shouldered goliath standing over seven feet tall, with slate-gray skin marked by pale natural birth-patterns along his arms and neck. He wears a badly fitted brown leather vest over a patched wool shirt, with one shoulder strap carefully wrapped in bright red thread. His oversized boots are repeatedly repaired with mismatched leather. Before speaking, he takes a slow breath through his nose and clears his throat as though preparing to address a council, even when merely asking for breakfast. A heavy greataxe rests across his back, and a tiny carved wooden goat hangs from his belt.
Mannerisms
Grog pauses and clears his throat before speaking, even in casual conversation. He points with his entire hand rather than one finger, tests the strength of chairs before sitting, and gives people food when he does not know how to comfort them.
Personality
Grog is blunt, warm-hearted, and intensely practical. He respects people who work hard, keep their promises, and share their food. He has a surprisingly gentle attitude toward frightened animals and children, but becomes boisterous and competitive around anyone who calls themselves tough. He prefers direct questions, direct answers, and problems that can be solved by lifting something heavy.
Ideals
Freedom. No chief, lord, monster, or tradition has the right to decide another person's path without earning that authority.
Bonds
The mountain village that first called him a hero gave him a red-thread shoulder strap as a symbol of their gratitude. He will protect its people and anyone who reminds him of them.
Flaws
Grog has little patience for complicated plans and is easily baited by anyone who questions his courage. He often mistakes stubbornness for principle, and once he decides someone is a bully, he is reluctant to notice evidence to the contrary.
Quirks
Background
Grog was raised among a wandering goliath clan that measured worth through endurance, judgment, and the courage to carry another person when their strength failed. He was never the clan's finest hunter or most disciplined climber, but he possessed an unusual talent for appearing exactly where trouble was worst. During a brutal winter, a merchant caravan became trapped in a mountain pass. Grog broke open an abandoned watchtower, carried three injured travelers to safety, and stood between the starving survivors and a pack of winter wolves until help arrived. The village called him a hero. Grog insists he merely disliked the wolves. After that winter, Grog settled for a time among the villagers, helping repair fences, clear landslides, and escort supply wagons through dangerous country. He became known for solving problems with a shovel, a cooking pot, or a greataxe, depending on how much patience the problem deserved. Yet the quiet life never fit him completely. The open road still calls, and so do the rumors of people being bullied by those stronger than themselves. Grog now travels as a wandering champion of ordinary folk, seeking worthy challenges, good stew, and proof that every tyrant eventually discovers someone louder and harder to kill.
