Appearance
Borgus is a 4'8" hill dwarf with a broad, heavily muscled frame and the compact strength of a lifelong miner. His long brown hair and beard are wild, uneven, and threaded with pale shelf fungi, tiny orange caps, and pale green mycelial fuzz. He wears mottled pelts, patched mining rags, and a thick dark green and brown wool mantle that smells faintly of wet earth. His hands are enormous and rough, with blackened nails, thick calluses, and fingertips permanently stained by iron dust and fungal spores. When calm, he breathes through his nose in slow, damp-sounding pulls. When angered, his breath becomes a rasping bellows, and the mushrooms in his beard tremble with each exhalation.
Mannerisms
Borgus leans forward when listening, as if trying to hear words through stone. He frequently checks the mushrooms in his beard, pinching off any that look unhealthy and placing the best ones in a waxed pouch. Before a fight, he taps the head of his hammer three times against the ground. When rattled, his breathing turns into a wet, rhythmic growl, and he becomes unnervingly still before exploding into motion.
Personality
Borgus is direct, observant, and unexpectedly patient with the frightened or inexperienced. He dislikes polished manners, wasted food, enclosed sleeping quarters, and anyone who speaks confidently about places they have never entered. Beneath his roughness is a practical tenderness. He repairs straps, shares the edible portions of strange creatures, and remembers exactly who stood beside him in a dangerous tunnel.
Ideals
The earth remembers every wound. Those who exploit the deep places must answer for what they awaken, and no creature should be judged evil merely because it grows in darkness.
Bonds
The mines of Järnberget are not merely my birthplace. They are wounded, and whatever lives beneath them must be found before it spreads into the surface world. Broder Buff is my companion, rival, and chosen drinking partner, even if I intend to win the next arm-wrestling match. Dagmar's mushroom came from my beard, so her safety is now partly my responsibility.
Flaws
Borgus mistakes decisiveness for wisdom. Once he has chosen a course, changing his mind feels like admitting weakness, so he may escalate a problem simply to avoid retreating. He is also too willing to taste unknown fungi, drink dubious liquids, or sleep beside dangerous things if he believes they are part of the natural order.
Quirks
Background
Borgus Järnrot was born beneath the black ridges of Järnberget, where dwarves measured time by shifts, cave-ins, and the ringing of picks. He learned to sleep on stone, eat whatever the mine rejected, and read danger in the pressure of a tunnel before the timbers groaned. Deep below the working levels, he found a sealed gallery carpeted in corrupted moss and pale fungal growth. The miners who entered with him returned changed, or did not return at all. Borgus emerged alive, but spores had taken root in his beard, beneath his skin, and somewhere behind his dreams. He remembers a sound like distant breathing beneath the rock, yet cannot say whether it was a warning or an invitation. Since leaving Järnberget, Borgus has traveled as a caravan guard, wilderness guide, and blunt instrument when negotiations fail. He prefers the open sky, old food, fermented scraps, and the honest weight of a weapon in both hands. He once traded a magical hat that altered his appearance, along with two hundred gold pieces, to Virgil Casimir for an enchanted two-handed hammer. He has fought ogres, bugbears, orcs, blood zombies, and a fluid blood elemental, learning that some enemies cannot be beaten by force alone. Still, force remains his first answer. His growing connection to corrupted moss, ley lines, and the strange life in his beard may be a curse, a mutation, or the first stage of becoming something the deep earth has been waiting for.
