Appearance
Neozak is a massive goliath, standing nearly eight feet tall, with slate-gray skin patterned by natural white markings across his shoulders and ribs. He wears his black hair in a short, uneven crest and keeps a collection of small bronze military tokens braided into one side of it. His battered red officer's sash is wrapped around his waist, faded nearly pink at the point where his hand repeatedly grips it. He takes up more space than he realizes, often standing too close and making ordinary rooms feel suddenly narrow. His greataxe is broad, practical, and heavily nicked, with a strip of blue cloth tied beneath the blade.
Mannerisms
Neozak leans forward when listening, unintentionally looming over people as though they are junior soldiers reporting for duty. He taps his thumb against the haft of his greataxe while thinking, counts exits whenever he enters a room, and addresses servants, guards, and common laborers with the same solemn respect he gives nobles.
Personality
Neozak is blunt, direct, and strangely courteous. He speaks to everyone as though they are fellow soldiers whose survival matters, even when he is threatening them. He enjoys loud meals, difficult terrain, honest arguments, and contests with clear rules. Beneath his swagger is a watchful commander who notices who is standing alone, who has not eaten, and who is pretending not to be afraid.
Ideals
Freedom. No commander, king, god, or tradition has the right to spend another person's life without earning their trust first.
Bonds
He will cross any battlefield to protect the soldiers who served beneath him, especially those who were abandoned by officers with cleaner boots and colder hearts.
Flaws
He treats caution as a polite word for cowardice, and he often commits to a course of action before anyone has finished explaining the problem. Neozak is terrible at admitting fear, confusion, or emotional attachment. When embarrassed, he becomes louder, more formal, and far more likely to challenge someone to a contest.
Quirks
Background
Neozak was raised among a highland goliath clan that measured worth by endurance, judgment, and the ability to carry more than one's share. He was never the clan's strongest hunter, but he was impossible to intimidate and unusually good at keeping frightened people moving in the same direction. When a lowland warlord offered his clan work as paid auxiliaries, Neozak joined for the promise of food, coin, and a chance to test himself against opponents who did not know the mountain ways. The army taught him discipline, formations, logistics, and the grim arithmetic of survival. It also taught him that orders could be stupid, cowardly, or deliberately cruel. Neozak eventually broke ranks during a disastrous retreat, not to save a commander, but to drag an entire squad of abandoned recruits out of a burning pass. He was stripped of formal command, though the surviving soldiers still call him captain. Now he wanders as a mercenary and adventurer, obeying only orders that survive his personal inspection. He believes civilization is useful, but only when it remembers that people are not equipment.
“The army taught him discipline, formations, logistics, and the grim arithmetic of survival.”
