Appearance
A lean, athletic human man with warm brown skin, sharp hazel eyes, and black hair kept in a short, uneven braid. His knuckles are calloused, his left eyebrow bears a thin scar, and faded gang tattoos circle his wrists beneath his monk's wraps. He wears practical ochre and charcoal robes adapted for movement, soft sandals, and a weathered hooded cloak. His posture is relaxed but constantly alert.
Mannerisms
Jalen rarely stands with his back to a door. He rolls a coin across his fingers while thinking, pauses before entering any room to count exits, and addresses frightened people in the same calm tone he uses with angry enemies.
Personality
Observant, quietly compassionate, and intensely practical. Jalen speaks little in crowds but notices every hidden hand, nervous glance, and poorly secured window. He distrusts institutions, yet deeply respects individuals who use power to protect the vulnerable. He is quick with dry humor and slow to offer forgiveness, though once he accepts someone as a friend, his loyalty is nearly unbreakable.
Ideals
Mercy. People are more than the worst thing they have done, because I was given a second chance when no one else thought I deserved one.
Bonds
The Quiet Bell Monastery gave me a life, and I will defend its people and teachings, even when doing so costs me everything.
Flaws
I assume every offer of kindness hides a trap, and when someone reminds me of my gang days, I can become reckless and vindictive.
Quirks
Background
Jalen Vey was orphaned before he could remember his parents. He survived in the alleys of Graybridge by joining the Knucklebones, a street gang that taught him how to run messages, lift purses, spot patrols, and sleep lightly. Jalen was clever enough to become useful and kind enough to become dangerous to the gang's leaders. Whenever the Knucklebones extorted food from smaller children, he quietly returned half of it. Whenever a beating was ordered, he found a way to make it look like an accident. His life changed when Brother Cael, a monk from the city monastery of the Quiet Bell, caught him stealing medicine. Rather than turn him over to the watch, Cael offered him a choice between a cell and a meal followed by honest work. Jalen accepted the meal, then stayed for the lessons. The monastery gave him discipline without demanding that he forget where he came from. Now he walks the roads as a protector, using the skills of a criminal to dismantle cruel networks from within. He still knows every back alley in Graybridge, still maintains uneasy friendships with thieves, and still keeps one old gang token hidden beneath his robes, a reminder that mercy rescued him before justice ever did.
