Appearance
A compact male halfling with a sturdy build, weather-browned skin, and dark chestnut hair kept close to the scalp. His hazel eyes are watchful and steady, with a small scar crossing his left eyebrow. He wears plain ochre and brown travel clothes beneath a sleeveless monk's vest, with cloth wraps around his hands and feet. A faded military insignia hangs at his belt beside a polished shortsword.
Mannerisms
He checks every doorway, window, and ceiling before sitting down. When thinking, he taps two fingers against his thumb in a slow rhythm, as though counting marching paces. He addresses strangers formally until they have shared a meal with him.
Personality
Quietly attentive and unfailingly courteous, Marek treats every person as someone worth protecting until they prove otherwise. He prefers practical kindness to grand speeches, keeps promises with stubborn precision, and has a dry sense of humor that appears most often when everyone else is frightened.
Ideals
Discipline is meaningful only when it protects people. The strong must be governed by duty, and duty must be tempered by compassion.
Bonds
He carries the faded insignia of the soldiers and civilians he rescued, and he will risk himself to protect anyone abandoned by an army, guard, or authority.
Flaws
He distrusts commanders and institutions so intensely that he sometimes mistakes necessary authority for tyranny. When lives are at stake, he becomes rigid, argumentative, and willing to endanger a mission rather than follow an order he considers unjust.
Quirks
Background
Marek Brask was raised in a halfling caravan settlement that supplied food, leatherwork, and messenger services to a border garrison. He enlisted young, first as a runner and later as a scout, where his small size made him invaluable in broken terrain, narrow passes, and night patrols. He learned to read a battlefield the way other halflings read a market crowd, noticing the missing bootprint, the silent cookfire, or the nervous horse before danger revealed itself. After a disastrous retreat caused by an officer's pride, Marek was ordered to abandon wounded soldiers and civilians trapped behind the lines. He disobeyed, leading a handful of survivors through a drainage tunnel and into safety. The army branded the act insubordination, while the survivors remembered it as courage. Seeking discipline without blind obedience, Marek entered a monastery whose teachers recognized the patience beneath his soldier's reflexes. He now travels as a wandering monk, protecting the helpless, studying the causes of conflict, and proving that lawful service means nothing when it is separated from mercy.
