Appearance
A powerfully built female goliath with slate-gray skin, dark braided hair, and pale geometric markings painted across her shoulders and forearms. She wears well-maintained chain mail beneath a weathered blue-gray cloak. A brass military whistle hangs at her throat, its surface worn smooth where her thumb rubs it during moments of thought. She walks with measured, deliberate steps, keeping her weight slightly forward as if perpetually approaching the next command. Her stillness is more striking than her size, and she rarely fidgets except to touch the whistle.
Mannerisms
Sarzha pauses before answering difficult questions and presses her thumb against the worn brass whistle at her throat. She gives instructions in a calm, clipped cadence, even in ordinary conversation, and instinctively positions herself between companions and unfamiliar doorways.
Personality
Sarzha is disciplined, observant, and profoundly dependable. She speaks plainly, dislikes wasteful displays, and treats preparation as a form of respect toward everyone who may have to rely on her. Beneath her stern manner is a patient, almost tender concern for frightened people and inexperienced companions. She is more comfortable repairing a strap or organizing supplies than accepting praise.
Ideals
Duty. A promise spoken before witnesses is stronger than fear, comfort, or personal desire. Civilization survives because someone keeps watch when everyone else wants to sleep.
Bonds
She carries the brass whistle of Sergeant Odran Pell, the officer who taught her that a command is a promise made publicly. She will not abandon soldiers, refugees, or travelers who place themselves under her protection.
Flaws
She obeys clear orders even when obedience has become less sensible than compassion. When forced to choose between rules and people, she becomes rigid, suspicious, and quietly furious with anyone who makes the choice more complicated.
Quirks
Background
Sarzha Varkesh was raised among the high crags where goliath clans measured worth through endurance, discipline, and the usefulness of every spoken promise. Her clan served as guides and wardens for caravans crossing the mountain passes, and Sarzha learned early that strength without restraint was simply another form of danger. She joined a regional infantry company after guiding a starving patrol through a winter pass, earning her place not through bravado, but by returning with every living soldier she had been ordered to protect.
