Appearance
Helen is a magically animated human head, severed cleanly at the neck and suspended in the air by a faint golden aura. She has broad features, warm brown skin, thick dark hair braided with tiny prayer beads, and bright hazel eyes that glow softly when she invokes divine magic. Her floating head is wrapped in a small ceremonial mantle and fitted with a bronze neck-ring bearing the emblem of her sacred homeland. She smells faintly of cedar smoke, sun-warmed stone, and the incense that constantly clings to her prayer beads. Her voice begins with a quiet inhalation and a soft click of the tongue before each sentence, as though she is gathering breath she no longer physically needs.
Mannerisms
Before speaking, Helen draws in a needless breath and clicks her tongue once. When irritated, she rotates slowly in place like a compass needle seeking north. She punctuates serious declarations by drifting closer until she is uncomfortably near the listener's face.
Personality
Helen is reverent without being solemn, affectionate without being gentle, and almost aggressively practical. She treats frightened strangers like junior acolytes who need clear instructions and a snack. Helen is quick to laugh, quicker to challenge a bully, and deeply uncomfortable with being treated as fragile. She considers her floating head an inconvenience, not a tragedy, and expects everyone else to adopt the same attitude.
Ideals
Protection. Sacred things exist to shelter ordinary lives. If a person must suffer so that a temple remains untouched, then the temple has already failed its purpose.
Bonds
Helen is bound to the sacred land that gave her purpose. She will recover its stolen relics, protect its pilgrims, and make certain that no one desecrates its shrines while she still has a voice with which to object. She also keeps a private promise to return one day to the mountain sanctuary, even if she must arrive as nothing more than a head carried in a reliquary.
Flaws
Helen is convinced that any problem can be solved by being more determined, louder, and closer to the danger. She hates admitting confusion, especially when reading maps or dealing with ordinary doors. She also takes mild insults toward her missing body personally, then insists that she does not.
Quirks
Background
Helen was once the champion of a sacred land whose temples were built into the sides of a colossal mountain. Her people believed their greatest warriors were measured not by their size, but by the amount of danger they were willing to place between the innocent and the abyss. Helen took that teaching literally. She trained with axes, guarded pilgrim roads, and served as a lay priest who could recite the names of every shrine from the salt marshes to the high sanctum. She was already a formidable warrior when a relic of her homeland tore her body away from her soul during an attack by grave robbers. The rite failed to kill her, but it left her as a living, floating head, sustained by sacred power and impossible stubbornness.
