Appearance
Varenia is a striking drow woman, 5'8" tall with a lithe, wiry frame and the coiled stillness of a predator ready to spring. Her skin is polished obsidian, flawless and dark, while her hair is a sharp asymmetrical bob of silver-white, one side falling to her shoulder and the other shaved close to the scalp. Her eyes are solid crimson, luminous and pupil-less, giving her an uncanny, piercing stare. She wears modern thief's black matte synth-leather, a sleeveless high-collared jacket with silver clasps, charcoal shirt, fitted trousers, quiet boots, and a utility belt loaded with sleek tools and a curved dagger. Silver rings and a small obsidian pendant complete the look.
Mannerisms
She moves with silent, deliberate grace, often standing just outside a pool of light as if she has already decided where every shadow in the room belongs. When thinking, she tilts her head and taps one silver ring against another. In tense moments, she speaks softly and precisely, never wasting words. She often checks exits without seeming to, and has the habit of looking directly at a person's hands before their face.
Personality
Varenia is calm, sharp-witted, and intensely observant, with the dry humor of someone who expects the worst from institutions and still manages to be pleasantly surprised by decent people. She values competence, discretion, and courage under pressure, and she respects anyone who can keep their nerve when the lights go out. She is not warm in an obvious way, but her loyalty is fierce and practical, expressed through solved problems, opened doors, and enemies made quietly unavailable.
Ideals
Freedom. No authority deserves obedience unless it protects the vulnerable, and no law is sacred just because it is old. A person should be able to choose their own life, their own work, and their own future without being crushed by the powerful.
Bonds
The district that sheltered her still matters more to her than any crown or contract. She keeps a private list of names, tenants, shopkeepers, and strays who once gave her food, cover, or a place to sleep, and she would burn a kingdom to protect them. She also carries the obsidian teardrop pendant of a younger sibling she lost in the Underdark crossings, and she refuses to let that grief become another thing the dark can steal.
Flaws
Varenia cannot resist an impossible lock, a tempting secret, or a rich fool who thinks security means safety. When angered, she grows reckless and personal, taking risks that a wiser thief would avoid just to prove no wall is high enough and no tyrant untouchable. She also trusts ordinary people faster than she trusts allies with power, and that habit can make her easy to manipulate through her compassion.
Quirks
Background
Varenia was born in the lower warrens where the city never truly slept, a place of steam vents, crooked alleys, and hungry people who learned early that the law only visited to collect tribute. She was a drow child with impossible crimson eyes and a habit of slipping through locked doors like smoke, stealing food first, then secrets, then, eventually, back pay from smug contractors and cruel house bosses. The neighborhood began to whisper that the shadows favored her, but Varenia knew better. The shadows did not favor anyone. They simply belonged to those willing to move quietly enough to claim them. Her legend grew when she started robbing the men who bled the district dry and leaving their ledger books exposed to the light, their names and crimes spread across the block like confetti. Some called her a thief, others a champion, and Varenia never corrected either side. She learned that a well-placed theft could feed a street, expose a predator, or buy a family another winter. Now she works as a modern ghost in a city of cameras and glass towers, breaking into places that think themselves untouchable. She steals from the powerful because they are careless with power, and because every relic, every ledger, every key she slips into her belt might be the next thing that keeps an ordinary person alive.
