Appearance
A broad-shouldered hill dwarf with a weathered beard braided with dried herbs, a moss-green cloak, and ink-stained fingers. He wears simple leather armor beneath a travel-worn robe, carries a wooden shield etched with leaf patterns, and keeps a druidic focus of polished oak at his belt. His eyes are keen and thoughtful, like a hermit who has spent too long listening to stones and streams. He looks sturdy, practical, and faintly untamed, as if a forest wandered into the mountains and decided to stay.
Mannerisms
He often pauses mid-conversation to touch stone walls, tree bark, or soil as if checking their mood. When he thinks deeply, he strokes his beard braid and hums a low mountain tune. He speaks softly, but his words come with the certainty of someone who has listened more than he has spoken.
Personality
Patient, observant, and quietly compassionate, Ulric prefers careful tending over dramatic action. He is at his best when mending what is broken, calming fear, or teaching someone how to survive with less waste. He values honesty, humility, and practical kindness, and he has little patience for vanity or needless cruelty.
Ideals
Balance. Nature is not kind or cruel, it simply endures. Ulric believes people should live in a way that preserves harmony between creature, craft, and wilderness.
Bonds
He carries a journal of remedies and revelations taken during his years of solitude, and he will not let those notes be lost. He feels responsible for every village, grove, and stream that welcomed him during his wandering exile, and he repays kindness with fierce loyalty. Somewhere in the world is the source of the blight or sickness that first drove him away, and he intends to learn the truth behind it.
Flaws
Ulric trusts solitude too easily and can withdraw into silence when hurt or uncertain. He can become stubbornly convinced that his way is the gentlest one, even when others are trying to help. He also has a bad habit of treating small wounds, strange plants, and ominous omens as problems that can be solved if he just studies them long enough.
Quirks
Background
Ulric was raised in a deep dwarven hold where every hammer blow had a rule and every rule had a history. He never quite fit the rhythm of the forge. While other dwarves learned to value the weight of stone and steel, Ulric spent his free hours in the cistern gardens, studying lichen, root systems, and the way water carved patience into bedrock. When an old illness began thinning the lower tunnels, he left the hold in search of a remedy and found, to his own surprise, that the wild understood order better than many councils did. He learned to listen, first to moss, then to birds, then to the quiet pulse beneath the earth.
