Appearance
Kael is a lean human man of average height, built for long travel rather than brute force. His dark brown hair is usually tied back with a strip of green cloth, and his sun-browned face is framed by a short, uneven beard. He moves with a quiet, forward-leaning gait, placing each foot carefully as if reading the ground even indoors. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice the faint scent of pine resin, bowstring wax, and woodsmoke clinging to his clothes. His gray-green eyes constantly track doors, windows, hands, and nearby terrain.
Mannerisms
Kael pauses before entering any room to study its exits and the condition of the floor. He speaks in short, precise observations, often glancing toward the nearest window when someone raises their voice. When thinking, he rubs pine resin between his thumb and forefinger, then smells it as if checking whether the forest is still close.
Personality
Kael is observant, self-reliant, and quietly protective. He prefers useful action to grand speeches and treats every campfire as a temporary home worth maintaining. He is patient with frightened animals, lost children, and honest mistakes, but he becomes sharply critical when powerful people dismiss the needs of isolated communities. Beneath his guarded manner is a warm sense of humor that appears most often when he is teaching someone a practical wilderness skill.
Ideals
Freedom. No road, crown, or custom has the right to own a person. Everyone deserves the chance to choose their own path, especially those who live beyond the reach of cities.
Bonds
Kael carries the carved token taken from the caravan raiders. He will risk almost anything to discover who made it and whether the raiders threaten his home. He also sends part of every substantial reward to the families of the two survivors he rescued.
Flaws
Kael distrusts comfortable certainty. He can become needlessly suspicious of maps, officials, and anyone who claims to know the wilderness without having slept beneath it. Once he believes someone is being exploited, he acts before making a complete plan, even when patience would serve him better.
Quirks
Background
Kael Theron was born in a small human settlement at the edge of a vast woodland, where roads ended and the wilderness began. His family served as guides, trappers, and messengers for travelers who knew enough to fear the forest but not enough to cross it safely. From childhood, Kael learned to read bent grass, broken twigs, bird calls, and the silence that follows when something dangerous enters the area. He became especially skilled with the bow, not because he loved hunting, but because a missed shot in the wild could cost someone their life. When a merchant caravan vanished along an old forest road, Kael joined the search and discovered signs of deliberate ambush, along with evidence that the missing travelers had been taken deeper into the wilderness. He tracked the trail for days, rescued two survivors, and drove off the raiders, but the leader escaped with a carved wooden token bearing a symbol Kael did not recognize. Since then, he has traveled beyond his homeland, working as a scout and guide while searching for the meaning of that token. He is determined to keep isolated communities from being treated as helpless backwaters, and he has little patience for nobles, maps drawn by people who never leave cities, or anyone who assumes the wilderness belongs to them.
