Appearance
Sigismund is a lean human man with pale olive skin, restless gray eyes, and dark brown hair kept in an overcareful, slightly antiquated style. He dresses in a once-fine blue wizard's coat, repeatedly mended at the cuffs, over practical travel clothes. His beard is trimmed with almost obsessive precision, while the rest of his belongings are disorganized. He smells faintly of lamp oil, chalk dust, and bitter tea, a scent he insists is evidence of serious scholarship. His spellbook is secured by three mismatched brass clasps, each labeled with a different warning.
Mannerisms
Sigismund taps the brass clasps of his spellbook whenever he is thinking. Before casting a spell, he clears his throat and announces a needlessly formal name for the effect. When embarrassed, he begins tidying nearby objects into perfectly straight lines.
Personality
Sigismund is intensely curious, argumentative, and theatrically confident. He treats every conversation as a minor oral examination and every mistake as an experimental result. Beneath his brittle arrogance is a sincere desire to be useful, particularly to people who have been dismissed as incompetent or inconvenient. He is generous with advice, less generous with listening, and genuinely delighted whenever a clever plan works.
Ideals
Independence. Institutions protect their reputations before they protect the truth. I will master magic on my own terms, even if every authority in the world calls me a failure.
Bonds
He keeps the broken brass seal of the Mages Guild that was removed from his spellbook when he was expelled. He intends to earn a reputation so impressive that the guild will be forced to invite him back.
Flaws
Sigismund cannot admit that he does not know something, especially when someone else is watching. He explains away mistakes with elaborate theories, becomes petty when corrected, and is prone to attempting a more complicated solution simply because the obvious one worked for somebody else.
Quirks
Background
Sigismund Freyr was born to a respectable family of bookbinders and raised among presses, pigments, and the disciplined smell of drying glue. His talent for reading magical notation appeared early, and a local Mages Guild accepted him as an apprentice after he impressed its examiners with an unusually quick grasp of arcane theory. Unfortunately, Sigismund's practical demonstrations were cursed by timing. A levitation exercise ended with a senior mage's wig floating into a chimney, a warding lesson redirected a rainstorm through the guild's dining hall, and an attempt to summon a harmless familiar produced a furious cloud of stinging blue moths. The guild eventually expelled him for incompetence, though Sigismund maintains that the official explanation was politically motivated and that every failure was caused by sabotage, atmospheric pressure, or an insufficiently respectful audience. He now travels as a freelance magical consultant, taking modest commissions from craftsmen, merchants, and adventurers. His Guild Artisan background gives him contacts among binders, scribes, glassworkers, and metalworkers, while his wizardly training gives him just enough knowledge to be useful and just enough pride to be dangerous. He is determined to return to the Mages Guild one day, not to beg forgiveness, but to present undeniable proof that they were wrong to cast him out.
“Unfortunately, Sigismund's practical demonstrations were cursed by timing.”
