Appearance
Combat Wombat is a broad, heavily built male tortle with dark olive-green scales and a shell mottled in rust, charcoal, and sun-bleached tan. He stands with his weight pitched forward over his front foot, as though perpetually ready to lunge, and he rarely relaxes his shoulders. His shell is polished obsessively along the edges but left grimy across the center, where he has painted crude tally marks for debts, favors, and victims. He wears a patched wizard's robe cut short for movement, a belt crowded with pouches, and a battered spellbook chained to his shell. His claws are stained with ink, soot, and alchemical residue.
Mannerisms
When waiting, he leans forward with one claw resting on his staff and one foot slightly raised, as though preparing to spring. He taps the rim of his shell whenever he is lying, loudly counts under his breath before using an area spell, and refers to allies as either assets or future liabilities.
Personality
Combat Wombat is smug, theatrical, and relentlessly opportunistic. He speaks with the confidence of a master strategist even when improvising wildly. He is fascinated by expensive objects, secret doors, and people who believe themselves morally superior. He shows genuine curiosity toward magic, but treats friendship as a temporary alliance and loyalty as a commodity that should always be priced.
Ideals
Freedom. No law, oath, tradition, or moral principle has authority over him unless he personally benefits from obeying it.
Bonds
His chained spellbook contains the names of every former crewmate he betrayed. He intends to find each survivor, recover anything they stole from him, and decide whether killing them or humiliating them would be more satisfying.
Flaws
He mistakes restraint for weakness and assumes every kindness is an investment he has not yet identified. When frightened, he becomes more vicious rather than more cautious, often escalating a survivable problem into a massacre. He cannot resist correcting someone else's magical terminology, even when doing so exposes his own ignorance.
Quirks
Background
Combat Wombat was raised in a riverside tortle settlement where patience was considered a virtue because everyone expected to outlive their enemies. He found the philosophy tedious. As a young adult, he joined a burglary crew that specialized in robbing abandoned wizard towers, not for the treasure, but for the spellbooks. Combat Wombat discovered that written magic could accomplish in seconds what claws and clubs required hours to achieve. He began copying spells by candlelight, learning just enough arcane theory to make dangerous things happen and just little enough to remain dangerous to himself. His criminal career ended when he betrayed his crew during a raid on an evoker's vault. He sold their escape route to a rival gang, kept the spellbook, and used a stolen fire spell to erase the evidence. The surviving members placed a price on his head, while his former criminal contact still feeds him jobs in exchange for increasingly unpleasant favors. Combat Wombat now travels as an adventuring wizard because it offers access to ruins, libraries, wealthy victims, and disposable companions. He is not interested in becoming powerful for its own sake. He wants to prove that caution is merely fear wearing respectable clothing, and that the cleverest person in any room deserves to own everyone else in it.
