- Favored EnemyLevel 1
Kaelen has significant experience studying, tracking, hunting, and understanding one type of favored enemy. His favored enemies are humanoids, specifically orcs and goblinoids. He has advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks to track them and on Intelligence checks to recall information about them. He also knows one language of his choice spoken by them, Orcish.
- Natural ExplorerLevel 1
Kaelen is particularly familiar with one type of natural environment, forests. When making an Intelligence or Wisdom check related to the forest, his proficiency bonus is doubled if he uses a skill in which he is proficient. While traveling for an hour or more in the forest, difficult terrain does not slow his group's travel, his group cannot become lost except by magical means, he remains alert to danger while engaged in other activities, he can move stealthily at a normal pace when traveling alone, he finds twice as much food while foraging, and he can track other creatures while determining their exact number, size, and how long ago they passed.

Appearance
Kaelen is a lean, weather-hardened half-elf with tawny skin, dark brown hair cut close at the sides, and gray-green eyes that rarely stop moving. A narrow scar crosses his left eyebrow, the result of a training accident involving a poorly secured watchtower shutter. He wears well-maintained scale mail beneath a faded green cloak, with the insignia of his former army company stitched inside the collar rather than displayed openly. His hands are callused from bowstrings, spear hafts, and years of fieldcraft.
Mannerisms
Kaelen habitually checks wind direction before answering a difficult question. He keeps his back to walls, sits where he can see every exit, and touches the inside of his collar whenever he mentions the army. When nervous, he gives terse field reports about completely irrelevant things, such as the number of windows in a room or the age of a campfire.
Personality
Quietly observant and dryly funny, Kaelen listens longer than most people expect before speaking. He is patient with frightened civilians, suspicious of grand promises, and unexpectedly competitive about campcraft. Beneath his disciplined manner is a restless hunger for novelty. He wants to be dependable, but he also wants someone to notice that he is more than the dependable one.
Ideals
Purpose. A life should be measured by the people protected and the truths uncovered, not by medals, rank, or whether anyone writes down what happened.
Bonds
He keeps a sealed letter from his mother and an old, nameless elven signet that belonged to his father. He intends to discover what happened to his father, but fears the truth may make the disappearance feel deliberate.
Flaws
Kaelen has trouble admitting that he does not know what he is doing. He overprepares for practical dangers while ignoring emotional ones, and he sometimes takes needless risks simply to prove that his life is finally significant.
Quirks
Background
Kaelen Ashwood was born on the kingdom's ragged eastern edge to a human mother and an elven father who vanished before Kaelen could form a memory of him. His mother taught him caution, thrift, and the names of useful plants. The forest taught him the rest. Before he ever carried a military spear, Kaelen could read a broken fern, judge an animal's age from a track, and find his way home by the shape of the hills. He grew up feeling divided between two inheritances, but the wilderness gave him a place where no one cared whether his ears were pointed or round. At adulthood, Kaelen enlisted in the army to earn a place that could not be questioned. He trained relentlessly and was eventually assigned to a ranger company as a scout. Yet the war he imagined never came. His service became a procession of border patrols, supply escorts, watchtower shifts, and quiet interventions against wolves, smugglers, and bandits. He became very good at preventing disasters no one ever noticed. After years of waiting for history to begin, he requested leave and became an adventurer. Now he takes dangerous contracts, explores forgotten ruins, and protects people who have no uniform to stand behind. He still wears his insignia with pride, though he jokes that his fiercest military campaign was against boredom. His greatest fear is not dying in battle, but reaching old age and discovering he spent his life waiting for permission to live.
