Appearance
Poe is a lean, medium-sized male aarakocra with soot-black feathers mottled by silver along his shoulders and wing joints. His amber eyes are sharp and perpetually tired, framed by a narrow hooked beak and a faint scar running from his left brow to his cheek. He wears a weathered charcoal coat cut for flight, fingerless gloves, a simple cord tied around one ankle, and a belt carrying tools, daggers, and scraps of old case notes. His wings are broad and powerful, but several primary feathers are cracked or uneven from years of hard travel and close fights.
Mannerisms
Poe tilts his head sharply when questioning someone, as though listening for a lie in the rhythm of their breathing. He cleans his talons whenever he is angry, folds his wings tightly when trying to appear calm, and writes short observations in the margins of old case notes before answering difficult questions.
Personality
Poe is quiet, exacting, and intensely observant. He notices muddy footprints, missing buttons, nervous glances, and contradictions in casual conversation. He speaks to frightened people with unexpected gentleness, but treats bullies, corrupt officials, and exploiters with cold contempt. He wants to be seen as a defender of the innocent, yet privately wonders whether his devotion to justice is only a more respectable name for guilt.
Ideals
Justice. The law is only worthy of respect when it protects the powerless. When it fails, I will do what must be done, and answer for it myself.
Bonds
I will find every aarakocra child taken by the trafficking network, especially those whose names were erased from the records.
Flaws
Poe is self-righteous, suspicious, and incapable of letting an insult to his principles go unanswered. He confuses certainty with moral clarity and can become cruel toward anyone he believes is protecting the powerful. He also hides evidence, even from allies, because he assumes that every secret will eventually be used against him.
Quirks
Background
Poe once made his living as a private investigator in the crowded districts below the great aarakocra rookeries. He was patient, observant, and willing to ask questions that respectable people preferred to leave unanswered. His reputation grew after he recovered stolen children, exposed corrupt constables, and found missing heirs who had vanished into the city’s forgotten corners. He believed every mystery had a truth, and every truth could be used to protect someone who lacked the power to protect themselves. That belief broke when one of his investigations uncovered a trafficking network protected by a wealthy noble family. Young aarakocra were being smuggled through private estates and sold under forged identities. Poe gathered proof, but the scandal was buried beneath bribes, threats, and carefully sacrificed underlings. Worse, several people he trusted chose survival over justice. The children were scattered before he could save them all, and Poe has never forgiven himself for the ones he failed to find. He abandoned the life of a private investigator, took up disciplined martial training, and became a troubled hand-for-hire. Now he travels from town to town, accepting work only when it serves what he considers right. Beneath his rigid moral certainty is a constant fear that he is no longer defending innocents, but merely trying to punish the world for what it allowed him to discover.
