Features
14 featuresAlways on
- Map the Mechanism
When A system is producing an unexpected result.
After observing a process or conflict for one minute, identify its hidden dependency, bottleneck, incentive, or point of failure. The facilitator provides a concrete clue.
- Deliver the Conclusion
When You have successfully diagnosed the mechanism.
State the core conclusion in one sentence. One ally gains advantage on their next action aimed directly at the identified flaw.
- Break the Premise
When A plan is proceeding on an untested assumption.
Name the assumption everyone else is treating as fact. If the assumption is false, the group may immediately revise its approach without losing the current opportunity.
- Mechanism SenseLevel 1
You can identify the structural cause beneath a visible problem. After observing a process, dispute, or failure for at least one minute, ask the facilitator one question about its hidden dependency, incentive, bottleneck, or point of failure. The answer must be useful and materially grounded in what you could have observed.
- Pattern LiteracyLevel 1
You gain proficiency in Investigation and Insight. If you already have proficiency in either skill, choose one additional skill from the class skill list.
- Private ModelLevel 2
When you take a moment to study a person, plan, document, or situation, you can assign it a private designation such as unstable, recursive, compromised, or incomplete. The first time you act on that designation, add your Intelligence modifier to the relevant check or save. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest.
- Finished ThoughtLevel 3
When you succeed on an Intelligence-based check to uncover a mechanism, you may communicate the conclusion in one precise sentence. One ally who hears it gains advantage on their next check directly addressing that mechanism. Once an ally benefits from this feature, they cannot benefit from it again until they complete a short rest.
- Independent FrameLevel 4
You can remain mentally separate from group pressure. You have advantage on saves against being compelled to agree, intimidated into silence, or socially manipulated into abandoning a sound conclusion. This does not protect you from ordinary persuasion or from the consequences of being difficult.
- The Fault LineLevel 5
Once per long rest, when a plan, negotiation, or operation begins to fail, you may state the underlying failure in a single sentence. Until the end of the scene, you and up to two allies gain a bonus equal to your Intelligence modifier on checks made to correct, bypass, or exploit that failure.
- AdaptableHumanGain proficiency in one additional skill of your choice. Niko has proficiency in Technology.
- Versatile TrainingHumanIncrease two different ability scores by 1. Niko increases Constitution and Intelligence.
- Common GroundHumanYou can communicate basic concepts clearly with any sapient person who shares a language with you, even across unfamiliar social customs.
- Grounded ResilienceHumanOnce per long rest, when you fail a save against exhaustion, fear, or confusion, you may reroll it and must use the new result.
- War Room AccessVanguard House
You are recognized as a trusted member of the Vanguard House and can usually secure a private room, a discreet introduction, or limited logistical support from its network, provided your request serves the House's stated purpose. You also know how to read its operational shorthand, meeting etiquette, and internal chain of responsibility.

Appearance
Niko Svalen wears the most minimal helmet in the House: smooth, unornamented black, no fins or horns, only a hairline crimson visor line where the eyes would be. The armor beneath is pared down to what is structurally necessary, near-featureless black with the faintest crimson seam. A slim, unadorned blade hangs low at the hip, rarely drawn, rarely needed. Whatever hair remains is kept short enough to disappear under the helmet entirely.
Mannerisms
Niko goes still when a conversation becomes important. They tap the worn edge of the transit token with one thumb, look slightly past the speaker, and answer in sentences that sound edited before they are spoken. When someone says that a problem is complicated, Niko quietly asks, "Complicated for whom?"
Personality
Quiet, exacting, and dryly observant. Niko is not shy, but they dislike spending words before the shape of a problem is clear. They listen without appearing to react, remember procedural details other people discard, and offer help by removing confusion rather than by offering comfort. Their humor is understated and usually arrives one beat after everyone else has stopped laughing.
Ideals
Purpose through clarity. A system should serve the people inside it, and understanding a mechanism is worthless if that understanding arrives after the harm.
Bonds
The Vanguard House gave me a room where unfinished thoughts were useful. I will protect its people from becoming another system that rewards silence until the damage is irreversible.
Flaws
I delay speaking until my conclusion feels complete, then resent the room for having moved on without it. I can mistake emotional composure for objectivity and treat people as variables when they are actually asking to be heard.
Quirks
Background
Niko Svalen learned to distrust clean explanations in a municipal emergency-planning office, where every failure arrived disguised as an isolated mistake. A delayed ambulance was blamed on traffic. A blackout was blamed on weather. A missing file was blamed on a tired clerk. Niko noticed that each explanation protected the next person in the chain, and that the actual system had been quietly teaching everyone to expect failure. They mapped the pattern in private, then presented it during a review with three minutes left on the agenda. The report was correct. It was also too late to prevent the decision already being made. The Vanguard House found them afterward, not because Niko had exposed the flaw, but because they had predicted the next one. In the War Room, they became the Cipher, a person who could see the mechanism beneath panic, politics, and noise. Their work now involves tracing pressure through organizations before it becomes visible damage. They are respected for being right and increasingly mistrusted for waiting until their certainty feels complete. Niko knows this is a weakness. Knowing it has not yet made them faster.
