Action

  • Delegation as a LifestyleLevel 1

Tomas can take the Help action only to encourage someone else to do the task, and he must remain seated, reclining, or leaning against something while doing so.

Always on

  • Delegated Outrage

When An ally within 30 feet is hesitating before attacking.

Tomas points at an ally and tells them that the enemy has insulted their family, training, or footwear. If the ally can hear him, they gain advantage on their next weapon attack against that enemy, but Tomas must spend his action shouting from a safe or mostly safe location.

  • Strategic Collapse

When A hostile creature approaches within 10 feet.

Tomas drops prone behind his stool and remains there, refusing to participate until the danger has passed or someone physically moves him.

  • Royal Oversight

When A teammate asks Tomas for instructions.

Tomas announces that he has accepted responsibility for the overall plan, then immediately asks someone else what the plan is.

  • Minimum Necessary EffortLevel 1

Lazy is not a standard 2014 D&D class. For this custom character, Lazy uses a d6 Hit Die, has no armor, weapon, or saving throw proficiencies, and gains no active combat feature at level 1. Tomas's contribution is primarily social pressure and tactical nonparticipation.

  • Infuriating PresenceLevel 1

When an ally within 30 feet is visibly frustrated with Tomas and can see him doing nothing, that ally gains advantage on their next weapon attack against a hostile creature before the end of their next turn. Once this benefit is used, it cannot benefit that ally again until they complete a short or long rest. This is a custom narrative feature, not an official 2014 class feature.

  • VersatilityHumanAs a human, Tomas has no additional special traits under the basic 2014 human option.
  • Royal Recognitionking

You are recognized, at least technically, as the former ruler of a minor human holding. Commoners may offer basic hospitality, guards may hesitate before arresting you, and anyone who has heard of your reign may expect you to have an opinion. You can usually secure a modest audience with local officials by presenting your battered signet ring and speaking with sufficient confidence.

Appearance

Tomas Palk is a plainly built human with a soft middle, untidy brown hair, and clothes that look borrowed from several different wardrobes. He always carries a dented brass bell on a fraying cord, supposedly a royal summons bell, though it has never successfully summoned anyone. The bell is polished smooth only where his thumb rubs it during arguments. Within a minute of meeting him, people notice that his eyes keep drifting toward the nearest doorway, low wall, or unattended chair, as if he is constantly evaluating escape routes and places to sit.

Mannerisms

Tomas settles onto his stool whenever conflict begins, folds his hands over his stomach, and watches the nearest competent person. He nods gravely whenever someone shouts, as though receiving a report from a trusted general. When asked to help, he raises one finger and says, "There is a larger strategic concern," even when he has no idea what that concern might be.

Personality

Tomas is mild, courteous, and almost offensively unhurried. He speaks as though every crisis is a committee meeting that has not yet become urgent. He is not brave, but he is remarkably comfortable being mistaken for someone with a plan. Beneath the laziness is a sharp instinct for noticing who is most likely to solve a problem, followed by a strong preference that they solve it without involving him.

Ideals

Preservation. A person who survives the battle has more political options than a person who heroically dies in it. The wisest ruler knows when to let other people become legends.

Bonds

He still wears the brass signet ring of Brindlewick and intends to reclaim his kingdom once someone else has made it safe, profitable, and politically uncomplicated. He feels a quiet obligation to the people of Brindlewick, especially the royal goat, who he believes was unfairly stripped of office.

Flaws

Tomas mistakes refusal to act for wisdom. He will let a problem grow teeth rather than admit he does not know what to do. When threatened by his own allies, he immediately declares that their anger proves his strategy is working.

Quirks

He calls every chair a throne if he sits in it for more than five minutes.
He applauds once whenever an ally lands a particularly impressive hit.
He keeps a written list titled Things I Was Almost Asked to Do.
He refers to dangerous monsters as workplace complications.
He insists the royal goat of Brindlewick could recognize him in disguise.

Background

Tomas Palk became king of the three-room kingdom of Brindlewick after a clerical error, a badly translated inheritance document, and the sudden disappearance of his uncle, who had been the only person in line before him. His reign lasted eleven days. During that time, Tomas issued one decree, postponing all other decrees until the kingdom had considered them properly. He spent most of his royal duties sitting behind the throne while advisors argued over grain taxes, border stones, and whether the royal goat counted as livestock or a state official. After Brindlewick was absorbed by a neighboring barony, Tomas kept the title because nobody had the energy to take it away. He now travels with adventurers, explaining that his role is strategic nonintervention. Tomas does not attack, heal, scout, carry heavy things, or even offer useful advice until the battle has become emotionally complicated. His unusual talent is making everyone around him angrier simply by remaining calm, untouched, and technically present. He insists this is a battlefield discipline. His former companions called it bait. Three of them are still looking for him.
