Appearance
Taviri is a lean, long-limbed high elf with warm brown skin, tightly braided black hair threaded with small copper beads, and a narrow, expressive face. His most noticeable feature is his mouth. Two slightly prominent upper incisors show whenever he grins, and his broad, quick laugh exposes a small gap between his lower teeth. He watches rooms by studying hands, belts, doorways, and unattended valuables before looking at faces, as though every gathering is a puzzle of movement and opportunity. He wears polished scale mail beneath layered blue and saffron cloth, with a silver holy symbol hidden among several false pendants.
Mannerisms
Taviri checks the position of everyone's hands before beginning a conversation. He rolls one of his false pendants across his knuckles when thinking, pauses before answering direct questions, and laughs with his head tipped slightly back, showing his prominent incisors and lower tooth gap.
Personality
Warm, observant, and disarmingly informal, Taviri treats every stranger as a possible friend and every friend as someone whose escape route he should know. He enjoys wordplay, small acts of theatricality, and making arrogant people doubt their own certainty. Beneath the practiced charm, he is more conscientious than he wants anyone to notice.
Ideals
Liberation. A locked door, a sacred rule, or a powerful person's command deserves to be questioned when it traps the vulnerable. Deception is a tool, not a virtue, and the worth of a trick is measured by who it frees.
Bonds
He owes his life to a traveling shrine keeper who recognized his first honest prayer and sheltered him from the people he had cheated. He sends part of every considerable reward to maintain that shrine, even when doing so leaves him short of coin.
Flaws
He cannot resist improving a lie, even when the simple truth would serve him better. When frightened, he becomes charming, theatrical, and impossible to trust. He also has a private fear that his faith is only another persona he invented because it makes people look at him with hope.
Quirks
Background
Taviri was born among high elves who prized perfect memory, elegant speech, and the careful preservation of old truths. He excelled at none of these. He remembered people by their shoes, lied too readily when cornered, and spent more time watching merchants work a crowd than listening to tutors recite ancient lineages. His gift was not scholarship, but recognition. He could see the instant a person decided to believe something, and he learned to place his words in that instant like a coin on a gambler's table. For years he traveled under the name Mosi, selling counterfeit blessings, forged pilgrim documents, and harmless prophetic readings. One of his schemes involved a stolen relic that he claimed could reveal a person's secret sin. The relic was genuine, and when Taviri touched it, he heard a voice asking why he used wonder only to make fools of the desperate. The voice belonged to a deity of trickery, misdirection, and necessary rebellion. Taviri returned the relic, exposed the priest who had planned to sell it, and accepted a new calling. He still lies, disguises himself, and cheats when the target deserves it, but now he tries to turn every deception toward freeing someone who has less power than he does.
